The best treatment is definitely a once-a-month spot on treatmen:I suggest products such as such as Merial Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Control and Advantage II Topical Flea Treatment.
You have to apply these products to the dogs skin between the shoulder blades; this way they cant lick them off, and I assure you they will try to, because the area will be very itchy.. They are then absorbed into the body andthey are effective at protecting the dog for 30 days; thats why it is recommended to apply them once a month.
These treatments can kill the fleas, their larvae and eggs; all stages of the flea life cycle are targeted by these products, making them very effective.
They are so effective at breaking the life cycle that you will not need to treat your house and yard.
Although spot-on treatments are safe for humans, be careful because they are rapidly absorbed into the skin and cannot be rubbed off.
An important downside to spot-on treatments is the price.
In face they are more expensive compared to a flea shampoo for example, but consider then with other treatments you should buy a pesticide for your carpets, upholstery and yard.
So, with a spot-on treatment, you’re paying a slight premium for the convenience on simply applying between the shoulder blades and the far higher effectiveness, compared to alternative solutions like fully bathing or coating your dog’s whole body with a powder or aerosol,in which cases you will have to treat your home as well. 
I personally prefer the chewable tablets like per example Nexgard, Bravecto and Comfortis. They easy to administer which means better client compliance. If I need to use topical products then I recommend Activyl or Revolution.
