Note the extraordinary image above, taken at Île de Re off the west coast of France near La Rochelle, this is a wonderful demonstration of the natural phenomenon known as Cross Sea - which can be explained with a little bit of physics and math.
Waves with this strange pattern in the ocean, occurs when two wave systems cross each other with angles almost perpendicular to one another. This can happen when waves generated by one weather system collide with waves generated by other weather systems, usually in places far from both weather systems.
