Hello Steemit Fretz!
Welcome to my Philippines Series, where you’ll get to understand and learn more about Filipino cultures and beliefs and our way of living and how proud I am to be a Filipino. You get to understand better “Why It’s more Fun in the Philippines.”
Happy Love Month my fretz! Here are my previous posts on Filipino courtship and traditions:
Pre-wedding Customs
Courtship In the Past
I just want to show you some out of these world beliefs that are usually prohibited or required in a Filipino Wedding. I can’t even attest if they’re true or not but they’ve been in existence since forever.
Wedding Superstitions
Even at this present time, there are still Filipinos who believe in these different wedding superstitions and some find them downright crazy and ridiculous. These beliefs don’t have any scientific goals and don’t even have any logical explanations.
This list doesn’t even make sense but I’ll try to recall as much as I can on these superstitious beliefs about weddings.
Disclaimer: Please don’t fret too much. This is written out of fun and it’s up to you if you believe these things or not.
A spinster or a bachelor who becomes ninong (godfather) or ninang (godfather) in the wedding will never get married.
Brides are not allowed to fit the wedding dress the day before the wedding day. Doing such, can stop the wedding from happening.
Any sharp objects, like knives or cutters aren’t ideal wedding gifts because the couple will have a broken marriage.
An arinola (chamberpot) as a wedding gift can bring fortune and wealth to the newly wed. ( I really wonder how something that is used for peeing can give you wealth ^^).
Eggs are offered while praying to Sta. Clara to make sure that it won’t rain during wedding day.
Rain during the wedding can bring wealth and a peaceful marriage. (Not sure how offering eggs and this one connects with the whole thought, to rain or not to rain?)
If one of the wedding candle flames becomes unlit, the spouse nearest to the unlit candle, will be the one who dies first.
It is a must that the groom arrives at the church first to prevent bad luck.
If the bride’s menstrual period is on the wedding day means they are going to be blessed with tons of children. (High chance that there's no honeymoon on the wedding night^^)
The more food prepared during the reception, the more blessings will come to the couple.
During the reception, breaking a glass or goblet can bring good fortune to the newlyweds.
You won’t lose anything if you believe them or not. Some of them are just too out of character and out of this world for us in today’s world.
Bear in mind that marriage is not just all about customs and beliefs. Marriage takes hard work and continuous trust, faith and loyalty. ♥
I do hope you enjoyed reading my country's wedding superstitions! Until next time my fretz!

I have heard a bit of the same thing about sharp objects like knives but a little differently. Basically in any situation if you gift knives (knives and cutting board sets for example), you also give a coin. The coin is to prevent the relationship between the gifter and the receiver. Can't cut the coin, can't break the relationship kind of thing lol.

That is an interesting concept. It does make sense and knives are an awesome gift for people who like to cook.

It helps if the car lift turns up, which was not the case at our wedding. My wife turned up late, but it was all ok in the end. :-)

I can't stop laughing "If one of the wedding candle flames becomes unlit, the spouse nearest to the unlit candle, will be the one who dies first". They won't even bring a candle to my wedding ceremony if that be the case.

"If one of the wedding candle flames becomes unlit, the spouse nearest to the unlit candle, will be the one who dies first. "
Wow I guess the ceremony or reception will come to a screeching halt if one of the candles goes out, and amidst the silence will be quiet sobbing and prayers :D
man the whole deal just took a very dark turn!
