Most of us today are engaged in social media regardless of age and status in life, but did we ever stop and check the effect whether good or bad? Today we will tackle the effects of social media on the younger generations a.k.a "the youth". Most of the so called millennials nowadays are so engaged in social media that they spend most of their time scrolling up and down through their smart phones, but do they know the effects of such lifestyle? Let's enumerate both the good and bad effects based on my own observation(from the teens in my community).

Fact: Based on studies, an average person spends more time on their gadgets(cellular phone, tablets, personal computers) than sleeping.

Let's start off with the good, who wouldn't want to hear the good stuff first rather than the bad. So with that out of the way let's get started.

Good Effects

These effects are good to the user whether it's mental, physical or emotional aspects.

Education

Education is the best legacy our parents can leave us with, at least that's what my parents used to tell me on many occasions. So education made it on the top of the list, students engaged in social media are more likely find it easier to fetch information they need for their studies than the traditional method of going to the school/public library. With the help of social media, they can easily connect with other students or in some cases they even resort to professional advice from pages they follow or like.

Information Outsourcing

Just like what I mentioned on the first item, which is education, you can gather information with just a few clicks with the help social media and of course the internet. But, it is not limited to information gathering but also information sharing, they can share information that needs to be share with just a few clicks and only a fraction of a second delay. Information drive has never been this practical and easy. Thinking back in the days when we have to print leaflets or posters to share information about something. Lucky kids, they have it easy during their time nowadays.

Job Opportunities and Social Benefits

These two comes in hand in hand in my opinion because in the real world, the more connections you have the greater your chances of landing on a desired job or occupation. And what greater way do you make connections? Obviously it is by socializing with others, may it be in your school, your community or the entire country.

The Bad

Well, there nothing much to say about this but, "the opposite of good".

Education/Work Distraction

What better way to distract as studying student? try playing a loud track from your youtube playlist, or show him an interesting, lewd, graphic video posts on facebook. Sure as hell his attention would be redirected to the distraction, especially during long study hours where study or a simple review would feel like eternal torment from hell itself.

Good Source of Wrong Information a.k.a Fake News

Anyone can post on social media, it's just like spreading wrong information by word of the mouth, the big difference however is, anonymity. If you spread fake information by word of the mouth(also known as gossip), the chances of you being traced is almost 100%, that's the scary thing about social media, anonymity is your best bet if you wanna mess with someone's reputation or credibility without the source being traced back.

Privacy Issue and Crime Susceptibility

By using the platform, some social media requests authorizations or even grant them full access to your private information like contacts, storage, activities and even location. Need I say more? obviously if you're not careful with these authorization request you're more likely to be a sitting duck for evil doers, and most likely vulnerable to evil acts like sexual assaults.

Most Efficient Way to Kill TIME

"Time is GOLD", or "Time is PRECIOUS". Those are the most basic lessons taught to us even during nursery days, to value time as priceless. There are no riches in this world that could buy back wasted time. And that's why social media is bad in some aspect, is simply because it kills time efficiently and effortlessly, and it's(social media) quite good at it.

There you have it folks, those are the effects of social media on teens or younger generations based on my observations. In my case I have 2 sons, and as much as possible I limit their time on gadgets(tablet and phones) and definitely "Parental Control" enabled on youtube and Chrome on all devices inside the household.

Tip:If you want spend time on social media, then spend wisely, spend it all on steemit!

Great article man! Indeed too much of a good thing is bad.

What's worse is the amount of fake news abound.

That part is pretty troublesome indeed, specially regarding government issue and scandals. I just hope these people who create and spread fakes news will be dealt with accordingly.

Fake news is just so rampant nowadays. If you don't research more, you'll really believe what they are saying. Most especially in politics, they're throwing stones at each other.

Well that just proved how dirty politics is. Never in my 29 years of existence did I ever heard of a politician talked nicely about other politicians. They always throw crap at each other...

True. The good thing about social media is that it opened people's eyes about what's really happening in the society. We can even get access about what's fake news or not. Unlike before, we just believed right away in what politicians or media are telling us.

Great article, @jamesanity06! I have upvoted and resteemed this post as my daily post promotion for people I have previously curated. Cheers! And don't forget to call @originalworks!

Thanks for the support @mitneb as usual, I haven't tried calling out to @originalwoks on any of my posts, I didn't know if it's active right now. It seems to be down, maybe?

I don't know exactly how it generates the confirmation. Sometimes it takes a little while before responding. I don't think it sleeps, though. Cheers!

Anyway, thanks again for the full support, it's nice having someone who got your back.

No problem, @jamesanity06! Now you've got me curious about the bot, so I'm going to do some digging on it. Cheers!

Which bot? the human bot? I think it's not really a bot, it's manual, depending on human discretion. Here's the article about it. Enjoy!

Thanks for the link, @jamesanity06. This link is for a different account with a similar name. I think that @originalworks is actually a computer program bot. It is run by user @unprovoked, I think. But I am going to contact him, and see if he has any articles about the service.

I see, I thought you were talking about the bot on the reply below. Thanks anyway for entertaining my query about @originalworks bot.

Well, we can not all sit in caves, we want to try something new!

Thanks for commenting, but let me say, "Too much of everything is not good, always aim for moderation."

I agree with pretty much everything you say here - but as in many things, it is more about the individual relationship that a person has with social media than any blanket statement you can make about social media. It is a good thing for some people, a bad thing for some people, an almost non-factor for others. But really you are kind of saying the same thing, you are presenting both the good and the bad. Some of those factors just weigh more heavily for a particular person than others - some people are more susceptible to just flushing time down the sink of crappy puzzle games, or scrolling through Facebook feed, etc., while other people are more likely to engage in networking and broaden their opportunities in this manner.

Nice job with this post, nicely formatted and well written. Following :)

Cheers - Carl

Thanks for the words of encouragement and constructive criticism. I am willing to read all comment even if they're pro or anti against my post as long as it would help me build up my knowledge to far greater heights. Again, thank you, and followed back.

So, second this time, alright, I can live with that, I'll do better next time, thanks for the support as usual, it's a big deal for us starters/beginners with fewer followers, your re-steem does give us a huge boost.

Yes, also the rewards point also, as the pool reward increases and you keep on getting to the top 3. You will have a big part of the reward pool. So even if your posts are earning cents at the start of the month you will have payout from Reward Pool. Yes just first build your following, engage in the community, the rewards will come. When I was also starting it was really hard, just need some patience, dedication, and hard work.

Yes, I will take note of that, keep on building followers and making quality contents, and reap the rewards later on, I believe in this platform, and I know it will go to greater heights that's why I want to build up more SP as time goes on.

Yes that is what I am doing, from starting 4 months ago. I never did withdraw anything from my wallet. Just kept on accumulating Steem Power. STEEM has a bright future with the upcoming SMT this is just the start of a bright future and greater heights as you said.

That's my grand plan as well, I'll dedicate all my steem and sbd to SP, pumping up SP would eventually pay up later on rather than weekly withdraws or encashment.

Yes it is like accumulating shares in a company. In the future it will benefit you. Just add value to each of your posts the main thing, then the rewards will follow.

Yes, very true. I wonder who this account will do after a year or two if I keep up my posting trend and quality.

Nope guess again!
