There Are Two Kinds Of Smart People

Back then, the general approach regarding education in my college (and also in some other colleges, I suspect) was for the students to listen to lectures for the whole semester and then, at the end, study like mad and try to cram as much material into your head as you can the night before exam, hoping you will at least still retain some of the material by tomorrow.

But one professor despised this way of learning. His exams were always open-book style, you were even allowed to search your answers online. When he was confronted by some students who felt that we would not benefit from his teaching style, he simply said "The way I see it, there's two kinds of smart people. Those who knows all of the answers. And those who knows where to look for all of the answers."

Even now, I'm still thinking about his words. Was he right? Was our education approach flawed? Is it better to be able to look for knowledge instead of having the knowledge? I still haven't found the answer.
