I think there two problems; Religion AND the people carrying out the horrible stuff that's justified by their religious books. For anyone to say religion isn't a problem, would be shortsighted.

@aevan Well, it's not that easy. Religion has both advantages and disadvantages, too. Same as atheism. Same as agnosticism. For anyone to say that isn't true, would be shortsighted, too ;)

I'd love to know what the actual advantages of religion are. As in, what does religion offer that nothing else can offer?

I think it's an interesting point, but I don't think it's entirely true. Religion trains us to be subservient, to go along with authority without questioning it. We are, as a whole, more subservient and more susceptible to the evils of government, because we have been conditioned to accept these things through the many different religions.

trevorlyman Your point is corrent, but personally know enough people and also stories of criminal people who found peace by turning themselves to religion and changing their lives to the better. It also gives some people a purpose in life. So it has both advantages and disadvantages.
