Our Narcissistic Nature

If the individual sees more worth in himself than he does in others, why would he want the company of others? Why would he expend himself on anyone else?

What good is worth if it's not shared? A person doesn't purchase a priceless piece of art keep it in a closet; a person purchases a valuable piece of art not simply for his own enjoyment, however, also, for the admiration of others.

Being happy with himself, he also desires to be admired. What good is wealth if it benefits no one? The larger an individual's self-esteem, the more pride he has, the greater his need for admiration. Contemporary psychology teaches us individuals of very little self-worth long for the admiration of others, and people of high self-esteem don't need it.

The Love Of Ourselves

However, I am beginning to question this; an individual who is ashamed of his home doesn't invite people over to admire it, however, rather, a person who feels like he has something to show off. It's the individual who is proud of himself who desires to show off his accomplishments; he seeks the admiration of others.

Conversely, the person of low self-esteem, the one who feels insecure regarding himself and is ashamed of the things that he has accomplished is not boastful, but modest. Being ashamed of himself, he doesn't look for admiration, he doesn't want to stand out but seeks the anonymous nature of the collective.

Low Self-Esteem vs Valuing Others

Having low self-esteem doesn't mean he doesn't value himself higher than others; if the individual valued himself less than he valued others, he would prefer others before himself. The individual attributes his shortcomings to no fault of his own. It's not himself of which the individual is ashamed but those things that have befallen him.

He doesn't identify with his misfortunes. That's to say, the good things that happen in his life are deserving, but the bad things are not. The individual attributes his successes to himself and his failures to the external world. As he succeeds, he overcomes the world; as he fails, the planet overcomes him.

In the former, the actor is the individual; in the latter, the individual is acted upon. In the former, the individual is responsible; in the latter, the planet is accountable. The individual will own his successes however never his failures.
