What Is Beauty To You and Is It Objective? ๐Ÿ’™

We admire many things but is there such thing as objective beauty?

Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder

All of us have heard the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" throughout our lives but is that true? Is it possible that a brilliant diamond is aesthetically less beautiful than a pile of vomit? Can someones perfectly symmetrical face be more aesthetically pleasing than a deformed and disfigured face?

This can also apply to music. Is it possible that some songs are objectively more beautiful than other songs? Some songs convey strong emotions based on lyrical content.

Some other songs provoke a deep connection in some of us just based on melodic content. I find myself listening to songs in different languages that I can't understand because of the melody alone. As of recently, I've been hooked on that song called 'Despacito'.

We also have subjective factors at play in these matters but I think there must be an objective component that makes us more convinced and compelled to something.

Maths, is it objective?

If you think about it maths doesn't actually exist. It is a means of describing the observable universe: the relationships and workings within it, just like literary definitions. These are structures, conceptual models that only exist in the mind.

Certainly, the same model can arise independently, but that is because it is derived from the same source: it is a means of describing the observable universe.

Mathematics is as objective as the word "apple". If the objects we describe as apples exist on an alien world, then they will have their way to describe it, similar to us. It is to help us understand physical observations.

My Final Thoughts

I would say that a consensus of opinion is not indicative of objectivity. If beauty is objective, there would be some means of testing or measuring it without relying on human opinions.

If beauty is subjective, nobody's assessments can be wrong. If I said "a brilliant diamond is aesthetically more pleasing to the eye than dirt"

Someone could say "no, the dirt is aesthetically more pleasing to the eye than a brilliant diamond" would it be a stalemate? Both of you would be right as each of you are held to your own opinion on what is more attractive.

What do you think?

I think that you are a beautiful person for even thinking about this my friend.
I enjoyed this little exercise very much.
The eye as an apparatus is fascinating and it is up to each of our minds to make sense of the information that our eyes present to us.

Thank you so much @rebbecaryan
It really warms my heart reading your reply.
The eye is definitely a fascinating thing but it all comes down to our mind to comprehend the image and embellish as something good or bad and this may be clouded as we think things with a higher monetary value is more beautiful which isn't the case sometimes

I could not agree more @arckrai! I think that I am one lucky girl to have seen you among all the other sparkling gems on Steemit! Well done, my friend. ;)

beauty is in the eye of the beholder, may be it also means that without an observer, beauty cease to exist. Beauty is only beauty when someone is looking at it.
But I honestly think that beauty is not only physical, but also psychological, for it happened that because of some people's actions, although they were considered beautiful, I started to find them ugly, in the true sens of the word, as if I was looking beyond the envelop and seeing the actual content within. Just an opinion thought :) cheers

I agree that beauty can be physiological and most of the time it is subjective all occurring in our minds without us realising

Beauty is one of the most subjective topics you can ever explore.
However they are some beautiful objects which are admired by millions, thousands, or even few people. Does the beauty seem to be more valued if admired by more is classified as more beautiful? Do We need in this subject public permission to follow?

I think that as humans we have a bias to follow the masses. If a group of my friends love a certain thing I might 'like' it to fit in or their opinions just purely add value to the matter

could the objective part of beauty not sit in our DNA. A week ago on a youtube documentary I saw this old yoga-teacher asking a physicist:"What part of your body has the best memory", to which the physicist answered:"the brain?" Yoga-master then mentioned the body itself has most memory, as your nose still resembles that of your great great grand grandfather.
I think the same could be said about beauty, we have evolved to like certain things, also as you say we tend to like symmetry. Maybe we evolved to like symmetry or perhaps it is the fact that our body is one with the universe and understands that symmetry is a part of the laws of nature.

Nice thoughts - that sounds like Sadghuru Jaggi Vasudev speaking of noses!

a great question! hard one to answer too huh! I would say its a bit of both. There is a fundamental mathematical beauty in all life that is based on golden mean proportions. We find things that are in harmony with the shapes and natural proportions to be beautiful..

But then there is a lot of subjective beauty within that which is our own preferences and likes / dislikes. That we over lay on top of the math.. I think when something doesn't follow the math first, very few will find that beautiful.

Therefore. if i had to choose one, i would say that the Math and proportions of our bodies primarily define our beauty and if we are deemed beautiful! ;=)

Its such a good question i might ask it to the ecoTrain. We're posting collaborative question and answers on a theme of the week... Would it be ok if we asked this same question and see what the 14 of us come up with?

You can check out this weeks post and question on the theme, what is freedom, are you free?

thanks!

I definitely feel that beauty is subjective. I think the label of 'beauty' is given when something or someone brings about a certain feeling in you. Perhaps a certain type of appreciation?

There are somethings in this world which seem to bring about this feeling in the majority of people (for example the sunrise), and thus it almost seems as if beauty is objective.

Another great post, I've been enjoying reading your blog this morning. :)

Followed!
