The Lower man and the Higher man

There is a higher man and a lower man within in oneself. The lower man can not be ruled by any man but himself; it follows from the nature of the soul which he is. And on the other hand, the higher man, even when compelled to act contrary to his own inclinations, does not behave in the same way as a beast or an idiot, nor can it be ruled by any other creature. The higher man is never so vile that he will not obey the commands of another human being, so long as those commands are not contradictory to his own nature. In all circumstances and under all conditions this higher man remains always at hand ready to be obeyed. But the lower man does not behave in this manner, and there are some circumstances when, even if he were commanded to do otherwise, he would not obey.
