Joe Rogan MMA # 32 | Firas Zahabi: "Empiricism is FAITH that the future will behave like the past"

in philosophy •  6 years ago

If you are in the mood for a mind blowing philosophical debate, check out this 1 hour video between Joe Rogan and Firas Zahabi.

Firas argues with Rogan about the reliability of observational knowledge, and appears to question empiricism itself, calling empiricism, "faith that the future will behave like the past."

Topics Discussed:

  1. What is knowledge?
  2. What is science?
  3. What is faith?
  4. Does free-will exist?
  5. All science is "woo woo"!

Um... What is Woo Woo?!

Woo woo is not a term I had heard before so I had to Google it. Here is what I found:

I really enjoyed this section of their discussion, and it is long, approximately 1 hour long, but there is a longer version online if you are really into it. The balance of the discussion was on other topics, and the philosophical debate was more my speed, hence my choice to share just this excerpt, not the entire conversation.

I hope you enjoy!

Rogan - Zahabi says science is all "woo woo"

Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I was able to appreciate the different points of view on these issues and I will give my opinion on this. The knowledge is the information that the individual has in his mind, personalized and subjective, related to the procedures, concepts, interpretations, ideas, observations, judgments and elements that may or may not be useful, precise or structured. Information is transformed into knowledge once processed in the mind of the individual and then again in information once articulated or presented in other people through texts, electronic formats, oral or written communications, among others.

Great comment, I agree. Its interesting though when you add into that mix the fact that our knowledge, about anything knowable, is limited by that "mind" you mention, and its "personalized and subjective" capability to process reality itself.

This is why I think its so important to struggle with the question of creation and God because at its base its a conversation about the deepest topics, what is life, reality, truth, etc, and if we are honest with ourselves we don't have answers to many of these questions (outside of faith claims) but most of us act and live like we do. Many people simply take for granted that their knowledge of reality is sufficient and reliable, but in truth it is only dependable in so far as our observations of the past are now applicable to the present or future.

Anyways, great comment, thanks for that.

so is friend, I agree with you, I mention this because it really is and I can not keep what you know is always necessary to continue looking for the why of things, and the "realities" that we live. Thank you!

Interesting video friend, for the big issues that get rid of us clarifies what is faith and how important it is to have it present, the knowledge that are the ideas that surround our mind, the science that is the accurate and accurate knowledge of society and thoughts.

Thanks @yoselin, I agree very big issues, so big I think a lot of people don't even bother. Its nice that on Steemit we can take the time to talk about something so... deep, and try through the process to better understand questions like what is truth, reality and faith.

So, he's a friend, I think we have these things in common. We like to make our community aware of all these values and beliefs. It is a pleasure.

Issues of great importance that we must be clear about their meaning in life, to give them the courage they deserve and make us stronger. Faith should never be lost so that in this way life can smile with wise knowledge and make us better people .

I've always liked the debates, and it's rare to see something like that on your blog but the video has enchanted me, I like to see that it is not all people think the same things, we will always have indifference and it's the great thing in life my attraction to the debates, it was fantastic I hope to see more of these greetings :D
