Anyone Sure that they are Right is Not Worth Debating

in philosophy •  8 years ago

Have you ever had a debate with someone who just refuses to listen to your evidence, and tells you that you are just simply wrong? Or perhaps you get the familiar "that is just unthinkable!" (but it's obvious that you are both thinking about it...).

This is usually accompanied by an accusation, such as "I can't believe you don't care about the poor people", or "You're just selfish and care more about yourself than others".

These conversations rarely have an enlightened ending. Both parties will usually end up feeling frustrated and no progress will have been made in regards to investigating and thinking deeply about the problem.

It is important to realize that there exist millions of people that do want to debate according to the rules of reason, evidence, logic, and critical thinking, and they are probably just as thirsty as you are for a good conversation.

Put yourself out there, whether online or in your community - blog, write, think, and make a difference by learning and creating solutions with people that actually care to address the problems that will affect the nation and the world in the long-run.

I have faults, but, being wrong isn't one of them. ;)

The fool has nothing to learn and the wise man admits he knows nothing!

Everytime you said "millions", I kept thinking in my mind "yeah, more like a few hundred".

Debating something in an intelligent and logical manner isn't easy. Quite often emotions get involved, and that's when logic goes out the window. :)

...and I rarely meet someone who is up to the task, where after the debate is over, we both chuckle, and go "well, that was fun".

You're right, I even questioned whether I should change millions to thousands (or like you said hundreds)... figured it would be more optimistic to say millions, but there my emotions messing with the evidence...haha

The mind is amazing - 7.5 Billion people can look at the same evidence and arise at 7.5 Billion conclusions - who is the one that allows and accepts ALL ideas?
