Did you know there are over 2000 types of fruit in the world? From those there are also many variations and regional differences; the world of fruit is quite diverse.
Our personalities are kind of like making a fruit punch of those fruits. Many of the ingredients are easily recognizable and common on their own, but we each take our own selection to make our unique mix.
Even among us that may choose to add an apple have so many choices to choose from. Adding a McIntosh is going to create a much different flavour than choosing a Granny Smith. We may ultimately both have apples in our blend, but the end result is going to be a different mix of bitter and sweet.
Of course there will always be some that throw in something weird like a durian, but you can pick them out by the smell. Where we constantly run into bias is looking at our own boring medley and assuming everyone’s is basically the same. We think our blend is all made of common fruits; we see these fruits every day, so clearly this is what is acceptable. This is what we can assume is the normal mix to drink.
People are by and large lazy when it comes to questioning these assumptions and neglect asking anyone else for their recipe. So when it comes to making decisions “for the majority” they assume they are part of that majority. They feel unfairly judged if they are ever questioned, yet refuse to give away their own recipe. Perhaps they’re too sure that it’s the same as everyone else’s. Perhaps they’re afraid to be wrong.
Even if you don’t want to be unique, it’s important to recognize that you are. The moment we start thinking we’re just like everyone else is the moment we start denying the beautiful diversity that exists around us. A mindset we all suffer for.
