Which came first? The chicken? Or..

This short story was written by Andy Weir, an author whose style I really admire. He wrote "The Martian." Which was turned into a movie starring Matt Damon as the main character, an astronaut stranded on Mars. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie, I highly recommend it.

I came across this story on Facebook today and it really grabbed my attention. This is a classic example of why I love reading Andy Weir so much. He crafts his story quickly, pulls you in with a paragraph. Makes you want to read more. What I especially love about this story is that it's a quick read but it'll make you think for hours.

The idea behind the story is original. It's not something I had ever considered before. I like the idea of it. You are in your own universe, you are all the people that have ever hurt you, ever loved you. It's a fascinating thing to think about.

The story takes the idea of something huge like the universe, and makes it small. Turns it in on itself. Shrinks the view.

I tend to think of things in the opposite way. I imagine the universe as a giant brain. We are all functioning as neurons or possibly some computer code, in order to help the brain learn. I like the idea that we are here to collect knowledge. Maybe our souls are the knowledge returning to the universe. (The brain) Maybe black holes exist to suck up any repeat input? What if the meaning of life is nothing more than to experience it?

What do you think? If you've never read Andy Weir before, would this make you want to read more from him? I've been a fan for a while and I never knew about this story. I don't get to read as much as I used to, but now I want to go read all his books. #booknerdproblems. 😂

I like it. I get into existentialist tailspins all the time and as yet yet do not have an answer or theory regarding The Point. I think it's cruel to live a life where we can conceive of the question and not get an answer.
However, I do think we are all Gods. Ahemahemahem my Pagan Elevator Speech:
Quantum physics says there exist an infinite number of potential realities and one falls into place in the presence of a conscious observer. This is called wave function collapse. So, we are literally observing reality into being. That's pretty much the description of a creator God, no? There are lots of us conscious beings, so polytheism: we're the Gods.

Yes yes yes! That makes so much sense. 🤩

Definitely brings goosebumps @khackett, thanks for sharing, wow...
