At my own detriment, I've been having some heavy debates with people on the internet regarding this very subject. I mean, I get the ideal here, I understand what it is that we claim we love and even worship, but I just don't see it happening, not today at least.

Let's be honest here, let's remove the partisanship from the table which in my opinion is not that relevant, and try to see American democracy for what it actually is: Who has more money. That's exactly what it boils down to, and pretending it works in any other way is drinking the Kool Aid.
When citizens united won the lawsuit, what was happening behind the curtains became mainstream, and I'm sorry to say Democracy never recovered. The system is so corrupt, it's hard for me to find redeemable qualities. All of the sudden what we have here is a group of elites, corporations and millionaires who prop up puppets into positions of power, so that they protect not the well being of the masses, but the well being of the few.
You would think that this makes it blatantly obvious that Democracy is not what's actually happening, but of course the whole thing is fabricated to have the appearance of a battle of ideologies and political inclinations. The elected puppets must have two sets of policies, the ones they present to the people, filled with populist demagoguery and the one spoken in private with their owners.
If you think that there are politicians that don't have owners then, i'm sorry to say, you are drinking the Kool Aid too. It takes but a few minutes to research who the lobbyist are, and how the operate. Here is where some people get shocked, some discard it in utter disbelief, and the voices of sanity get drowned out as fringe actors.
Professor Noam Chomsky recently gave an interview in Democracy Now, that, in my opinion, paints the picture perfectly. I would encourage you to give it a good listen and reflect on our current situation. To me his observations are so spot on, I've not found one thing to critique.
Yes, I may be sounding the drums of ideological war here, but truthfully I'm done with the puppet show. I'm very far away from caring about any of the candidates. All I see are people with owners, pretending they believe in Utopias.
MenO
Lobbying is exactly legalized bribery.

I cautiously agree with you here but would highlight that alternatives lack for the future as the current system is probably to only one that still provides an opportunity to build from nothing. Others still don’t have that which is why a shift is difficult to obtain.

I'm inclined to agree here, especially in the two main parties. Make you wish an independent could come in without those money connections and sweep the elections by being the opposite of everyone else. Like that'd happen...

IMHO, the truth hidded for ages begins to open it's real face. And this face is not the one we all expected to find. Modern technologies make impossible to hide all "dirty" things common people have not to know about.
