Engaging with gratitude - Thoughts on Poverty and wealth

in philosophy •  6 years ago  (edited)

We've all heard the cliche saying "Poverty is a state of mind" - I've always felt the saying lacked pragmatism and almost always discarded those would be life coaches when they went down that route. Over the years, after experiencing a little more living I've come to understand a meaning that makes a lot more sense to me. This short video is my best attempt at explaining it.

As you might have guessed from the title of the video, the approach I'm taking here is rooted in gratitude. This means of course that is not dismissive of real poverty, the kind Ghandi was talking about, and it's more about attempting to re-assess one's perspective. A situational mirror if you will.

Hope everyone had a great start to their week.

Haha. This is economy week in Helpiestan. 😁

Helpiestan!! hahahah me likes

There are people that have almost nothing. Yet they are happy. There are many Americans that have almost everything and are ready to jump off a bridge. The mind has a massive effect on how we look at the world.

Well said Ethan... I mean, not to be undelicate but, all these artists, famous artists with more money than any of us would know what to do with completely miserable. Why is that?

I absolutely love what you had to say here. This is such a gentle and friendly reminder to enjoy what I DO have. Money is a cycle. It comes and goes. It's so good to remember that I'm a-okay with where I am and to be grateful for the things I CAN afford. Thank you!

thank you for watching and for your input. Great attitude... ;)

First and foremost! Cool fucking Metallica shirt!

Now for the real talk, I know exactly what you are talking about, I was born into a family that had enough money to go around and buy the stuff we all wanted, when the 2008 financial crisis hit, we were hit hard, really hard, not only because of the crisis but because of other factors! Now, my family were always saying they were on the "verge of going down", etc...etc... but we all had cars, we had houses, we ate like kings, the money was just less, I was always saying that they should be happy because of the things they had, but I guess in their mind they were poor because they couldn't see the things they had, they always wanted more!

Regardless of that, if people don't like being poor decrease the expenses, increase the income, saving 1 buck a day is enough to make life easier, if not for them then for their kids! And if they can't increase the income because they don't have the skills for it then just learn the skills! We have a great tool called the internet! We can all learn new things!

That's right... pulling yourself from that emotional rot is hard though, and many who are there give up too easy.

Very well said. I totally agree with you.

I think money is a massive source of worry for many people for good reasons. But once you have food, shelter, friends and something to do that makes you feel useful, a person doesn't really need much more than that.

So at that point, as long as you have those basics, a grateful abundance mindset is the key to a happy life.

And if you don't have that mindset, you can be a thousand times richer and still be completely miserable.

It boils down to understanding the difference between necessities and wants. Some don't ever draw the line.

Perfectly said Rodney... more ninja points for you.

I'm enjoying being a ninja lol. :)
