What is Objectivism?

in philosophy •  7 years ago

Is the existence of truth, in which the truth stands independent of the mind and perception.

In Ayn Rand's own words, she describes Objectivism as

"My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute."
— Ayn Rand - Appendix to Atlas Shrugged.

It looks like Ayn Rand used to study how the human mind works. Without happiness comes distress. With distress comes anger and with anger comes a fight which can lead to war. A war can lead to the total destruction of the human race. It will subsequently lead to immorality. There wouldn't be anything to fight for.

Now with the case of happiness, it brings out the moral being of the individual. If that sacrificial animal phase is not there will be total happiness. You wouldn't have to do something you're not happy with anymore.

I started my life with a single absolute: that the world was mine to shape in the image of my highest values and never to be given up to a lesser standard, no matter how long or hard the struggle.
Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged
