The Steemit Society: Gypsies, Tramps and Theives

I've got no complaints about the Steemit Society, I've done pretty well here despite not being very popular. I've only recently started paying attention and reading through FAQs at tips and such. Ironically the more I learn about how to be successful in SS (Steemit Society) the less successful I've been.
Steemit is like a society within a society. A cyber-realm that I am somewhat familiar with. I spent a lot of time in chat rooms exchanging fantasies, if you know what I mean. There were no "rewards" involved, unless of course we actually met, cheek-to-cheek.

Romantic memories of cyber-sexing aside, communities in which humans power the avatars generally behave the same. Anonymity fuels bravado, sensuality, violence and general bullshit. But there's also genuine compassion, humility and spirituality. All this and much more is alive and active with the SS.

The competition for attention combined with "money" (Steem's three currencies) makes for interesting social observation.

I recently read an "epic" blog from a character that didn't pass the smell test. In fact it smelled like teen bullshit. There's a general rule that seems to hold true, most of the time.

"The longer (or more) someone talks, the more likely they are to lie."

Even if you don't buy this saying, think of your most bellicose friends and co-workers and see if it doesn't ring true.

The blog I have in mind, not mentioning any IDs, was the equivalent of someone talking too much with nothing, like proof or evidence to make it credible. No images; there were commercial images, but nothing that suggests any of the bio-history was true.

"Popularity can be purchased here."

Steemit is a visual society. Pictures of the author, or those created by the author make it more intimate and intimacy builds trust and if you're going to share your cyber-currency with others, I think you would want to believe they are at least authentic.

Between both worlds I believe I've learned to detect if someone is full of shyt or sincere. (Some people are sincerely full of shyt.) But you never know for sure, unless you catch them "pattern lying."

Experience with con-artists doesn't make me immune from being conned... just not as often and not as personal. I've learned to detect some of the inconsistencies of insincerity.

But this is to be expected. Sad, but true.

So here's a few more things I've learned about the Steemit Society. (*Note, I've been in this community for over two years, but my participation has been passive.)

"More can be earned by upvoting your own posts... "

Popularity can be purchased here. Resteem bots, (I guess) with lots of followers will, for a fee, promote your blog to their followers. I've discovered that one in particular produces almost 50 upvotes, but no Steem. Those upvotes come from dormant accounts. It's like getting approval from mannequins.

Another service I tried returned slightly less Steem than I'd invested. To invest 0.5 - 0.7 Steem for a negative return isn't worth it. More can be earned by upvoting your own posts, which I recommend. Zero beats a negative.

As with any commercial society there will be short cuts attempted and taken. There will be those who produce and share what they do and love, market themselves successfully and reap the rewards, and there will be those who sink to the lowest depths, and there will be those you try to convince us of their lofty goals and dreams and those who will out right steal and swindle others out of their currency.

There's room for all in the Steemit Society as this is in our "reality" society. We must be aware of this on both platforms.

Ciao.

Thank you for your comment... @noxsoma

Thanks for this one - I'm relatively new to this, and it is quite a subculture to figure out (as you said). I've appreciated meeting a few genuine folks on this platform, but it does take some energy to get there. I'm curious where this will eventually end up. Thanks for the article
