Mark Twain, the Celebrated American writer once (or more than once) said: “Of all the things I’ve lost I mis my mind the most.” For many years I would relate to this with great enthusiasm, but recently I have come to new insight.
I would think back to yesteryear and remember the carefree living filled with a bouquet of new experiences. Now I am not referring to teenage exploration or irresponsible frolicking. I am talking about having the energy and freedom of mind and more importantly, freedom of spirit to actively engage in creative living most daily: Visiting new places, taking a new route to work, trying your hand at playing an instrument, attempting a new sport, cooking a new style of cuisine, talking to complete strangers, playing on a jungle-gym with your son, racing your wife with a shopping cart. You know, the type of stuff that makes you feel alive!
Well for many years I would work my butt off: Getting up early, rushing out of the house, barely time to greet my wife & son. Work long hours, nights and weekends. Miss important occasions, forfeit weekends with friends or family, cancel decade long exercise routines and the likes. Until you get to the point where you realise that you have barely taken time to eat or shit the whole day (or two.)
Does any of this sound familiare? I am sure many readers will recognise this. (If you know someone who doesn’t have the time to read this please tell them about it)
Not freedom from responsibility, but freedom of soul! The freedom to have time to be creative. To do stuff that are important on a fundamental level, not a practical one. That adds real value to your life and the lives of those around you. Think back a couple of years. What good things do you remember? What did you or someone else do that still has value today, and will have value for ever? The type of value that money cannot buy. That is what I am talking about.
Can you relate to this? I would like to know if there are others out there that share my insight.
I can definitely relate to your post. My wife and I discuss this very topic from time to time. Sometimes my mind wanders to the place where, we are living a simpler life, no rushing around, worried if the DVR is recording the show I desperately cannot miss. We talk about being a better human, not just person. Thank you for posting your thoughts, it sparked the flame again.

It helps to get your focus on the important things in life. The moment my wife & I decided that the house & car was not more important than living a happy life, everything started changing.
