The Mind and the Brain

in philosophy •  7 years ago

I recently wrote an article on some things to consider about what may happen in the instance of the body dying. In that article I made the case for consciousness without a physical form and the possibilities that would be associated with such a situation. In this article I’m going to try and further clarify the differentiation of the mind and it’s relation to the brain or body connection.

It is often thought that the thinking that we do is somehow caused by chemical reactions within our body, specifically in our brain. I’ve read that scientist are currently mapping out what the different areas of the brain are associated with different functioning throughout the body. All these things are true in some sense. The brain is indeed the controlling mechanism of the body.

The brain is the hunk of fats and sugars that is located inside of our head that enables the mind to function (through it). Think of it like the brain is the processor and the computer is the body with the mind being the internet. The processor is necessary to run the computer and makes the computer function (perhaps the motherboard cpu combo might be a better choice of analogies). The totality of the computer is a means to access the internet but the internet itself is not located within the computer.

So, where is the internet located? Some of the more tech savvy among you may say servers around the world which is correct but in essence what I am eluding to is the internet is not in a specific location. It works through your computer and within your computer but is not limited to it. Your computer can access information through it and the information is then translated through your computer’s software to make sense to you. And, if your computer were to cease to exist the internet would still just be.

The profundity of the mind extends far beyond the limitations of the internet, obviously. The context of the mind are both time and space which makes it very much all-encompassing and abstract to say the least. But, for now I want to just convey a general idea that the mind is much more than we think.

Once again I hope you enjoyed the discussion and it got you thinking. If you liked what you read why not resteem it so that others can enjoy it as well?

hihi, nice question :)

Sorry got to completely disagree. The mind is the information in your brain. Its the information and the way it is connected in your brain that gives rise to consciousness . I have to agree with Max Tegmark in that regard. However its the information and the connections between that information that is much i more important than the underlying structure of the brain. So its very possible that machines could in the future be conscious. Or that we could transfer the information and its relationship between itself , in your brain on to a computer which would then be conscience version of you but not you.
