Sittin' Up with the Dead Blog - Post 007 - The Half Carafe Test

I'm an MK/PK (missionary kid/preacher's kid) and my father came from a VERY conservative denomination that believed that no Christian should ever drink wine, even for "communion." As time went on, I found ZERO substantiation for that position in the Bible.

While my dad and I agreed on many subjects, drinking alcohol became one of those we permanently disagreed on. I was amused to find repeated references to wine as a gift from God. There's even a passage in Deuteronomy that instructs God's people regarding their tithe. In that regard, if it was TOO MUCH to bring to the Temple, they were to sell their tithe (of animals or produce, etc...), and go buy wine and "strong drink" and have a party to celebrate. HAHA! I remember my father's bewilderment when I read him the passage. He hemmed and hawed and grumbled as he walked out. A good reminder that "he who is convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." God's gotta laugh at us sometimes.

On your question about how often a discussion of Biblical topics come up over a drink...I've had many EXCELLENT conversations on meaningful topics, including the Bible and faith. I always wished my dad had experienced the camaraderie that the relaxation factor of a nice glass of wine can bring about in conversation. He passed away years ago, but I'm convinced that when the Lamb serves him a glass of wine at the "wedding supper", he will accept it gladly.
