I wrote something in my last post about how we perceive world:
"Being aware that you see and understand the world only through your senses and brain, helped a lot.."
This sentence made me think even after writing my thoughts down, especially after some recent events in my life.
Few days ago I had one of my famous headaches, the type where you have to isolate yourself from sound and light in order for it to go away. I am not a person who would use drugs of any kind (antibiotics especially), because I think our body is trying to tell us something with the pain, there is no point in just "muting" it. I just had to figure out why my head hurts, and how to fix it. I knew my headache can come from few things (and many others):
- Not enough water in my body (guilty as charged) ;
- Low blood pressure (because why not);
- Eyesight (wait, what?);
I remembered that I read for few hours, in not so perfect lightning, and I drove my car on a pretty dark highway. I was sure that I have to check my eyesight again, after 10 years. I wore glasses with minimum dioptre few years ago, but mostly while studying. I thought I saw good, not great, but let's say good enough.
I went to the optometrists to check everything out, and to my big surprise I couldn't see most of the letters and numbers on the test board. I was embarrassed, like she is going to judge me or give me some low rating (silly). I even tried to remember the numbers, to perform better, but it didn't work. I just couldn't believe that I can't see that much. The doctor was a professional (thank God) and prescribed me glasses after all the tests, and I picked them up yesterday.
Since then, I can't tell you enough of how much my world changed. I could see (not that I couldn't) everything, every detail, letter, billboard, leafs on the treas, hair on my dog. I was ecstatic! But then it hit me (my overthinking mode) - what did I see (missed) until now?
Everything I know about the world I learned through my senses, and it turns out they are not even working right! My eyes were perfect for me, and my brain got used to the fact that I see the way I see. I thought of it as "normal". In fact, my brain got so used to it, that now I have a problem adjusting to my glasses and sight (it will get better, they assured me). How can you trust your other senses, and make decision based on the feelings they send you, when they can be wrong (obviously)?
The question haunts me, and I know that I am not the only one. I will read about it more, and I already have some knowledge on the subject, but I suppose no one really has an answer to that question. I came to the conclusion that my truth is not yours (for example we see the world in different resolution), and there all the fun and differences between us begins. My eyesight didn't allow me to see details, it's like a blur in some kind of photo editing. But, I don't see it as a disadvantage, just something different about me. Maybe that same sight made me an optimist (you know, not being able to see all the ugly details :)).
And to be honest, we don't have much choice, since we believe our senses and let them guide us. We made it this far, so I think we are going to be OK.
My inner nerd coming out
What do you think on the question of illusion and senses? Be sure to leave me a comment!
With love and glasses,
Tamara
Those headaches sound seriously bad. Sometimes I have neck aches that slow me down for a day.
I think the glasses look stunning 😄
And finally I have been away traveling for 4 days so sorry if I have fallen behind on comments!

The physical sense are one way to perceive Life. And most of the time it isn't accurate either.
We only perceive a minuscule amount of what it's out there. As in the case of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

I think the same applies to our senses as well.
Great post @Tamacvet! Also, you're inner nerd is beautiful! XD

I perceived even less then others :D But yes, the truth is that we miss out on so much (one can only assume).

Well, I need to continue this conversation - you built it up perfectly for this scene to come up.
Take care of yourself, cherish life, and like Slavoj Zizek says beauty is in little imperfections.
Cheers, dear steemians!

It is amazing how we all try and beat that eye test... it's so silly especially when making sure it's accurate (instead of you being right) makes such a huge difference.
I get very similar headaches after flying all day, which I have to do a couple of times a month... I'm trying to figure out what it could be, but there are so many variables, water, posture, neck position, cabin pressure, etc etc.
I often find it amazing that we have senses at all... how amazing that eyes work the way they do... and that we can hear from tiny little hairs in our ears... and we can taste... it's so weird and amazing.
At the end of the day, in whatever situation, you can only hope to make the decision with the information you have... so if your senses aren't quite giving you anything... it's not the worst thing in the world, it's just what you have.

Love this part, it made me think about how important is to do the best you can, with the knowledge you have. And learn from mistakes, to do better next time.
In any case, the doctor was amused by my effort to "cheat" the test :D
Thank you for reading, and leaving a comment worth thinking about!

Good question, as usual. It's always the question of perspective. Very often we find people with excellent sight, but not able to notice elephant passing by.

I like your comparison of getting new glasses to how we sense the world around us.
A fun thing to realize is that we are/can mostly be in control of the glasses (perception) we feel like wearing or experiencing in a given moment.
Thanks for your fun to think about post! Cool glasses also! 😎

I like your post. I actually just followed you when I saw you upvote one of mine. Your post reminded me of a friend who used to work in a hog farm. At first he had difficulty with the stench but after a few months he got so used to it that he realized he could take his lunch while inside the farm. His concept of stench and what smells awful was changed because of that experience. So when you ask about illusion and senses I immediately thought of my friend and how apt his experience was with the question. Nice and thought challenging post. Great glasses too.

Our senses are important for interpreting outside stimuli, but have little effect when reading for instance, as long as you can see the words. Of course, if you cannot there is brail. Your brain is the interpreter and even this can be fooled by your senses. What shows you haven't missed to much, is your ability to question. This post shows you have that down. You can be blind, mute and deaf, yet you can still question. As long as you do this, you are ahead of the game.

I like your posting...
Here's a quote I want to share with you...
By Sir John Carew Eccles:
I want you to know that there are no colors in the real world, there are no fragrances in the real world, that there’s no beauty and there’s no ugliness. Out there beyond the limits of our perceptual apparatus is the erratically ambiguous and ceaselessly flowing quantum soup. And we’re almost like magicians in that in the very act of perception, we take that quantum soup and we convert it into the experience of material reality in our ordinary everyday waking state of consciousness.
