Just wait and see

in philosophy •  6 years ago

This morning we were at the hospital with our daughter to see a neurologist about the seizures that started before summer but she couldn't shine much light on the cause or course of action. Essentially, we just have to wait and see if the seizures will happen again and at what intensity. One of the first phrases I taught to my daughter was "Be patient" so I guess that I have to set an example for it too. I try not to be too hypocritical or a "Do as I say, not as I do" kind of parent. It is difficult but I prefer a wait and see approach than rush into a diagnosis based on inadequate information.

Life is both simple and unbelievably complex simultaneously. The simplicity is that at the core of life itself, there really are only a few basic needs that require satisfaction in order to satisfy survival. The complexity comes through the psychological layers on top that give us the drive to want more and, the cognitive skills to create capabilities that we alone are incapable of performing.

The hospital is going through a large expansion and there is construction all over the complex. My daughter likes machines of all sorts and as we walked past was saying, "yellow excavator, orange excavator, tall crane" and was watching them intently. Although similar in process, there is a massive difference between an animal using a stick to get ants out of a hole for a meal and our ability to create the machinery to literally move mountains.

Our capacity to affect and manipulate our environment is enormous and due to our insatiable appetite for advancement, there is no limit on how far we go other than universal law and, our tendency to compete against each other until annihilation. There is nothing in our programming however that says we can't develop in a sustainable way, we just choose to rather face off against each other in a myriad arms races to be the first to benefit from the new, even if that benefit comes at the harm of others.

We as the human species are only able to live in a narrow band of environment and climate with a fragile balance of chemical compounds required to support us. Too much or not enough of some factors can cause the environment to become unlivable for all of us and then without technological development, nature cannot evolve us fast enough to adapt.

It is an interesting process as it is likely too late to just 'heal the world' if we stop polluting it today as what is required is rehabilitiation, not rest and recovery. The earth of course doesn't care as despite us calling it 'Mother', it is an unconscious and dynamic ecosystem that was here before us and will outlast well past us as a species, even if life does not survive on the planet at all.

What this means is that for us to survive, we have to find solutions to bring a balance in the environment where humans and all we need is safe for us to continue. What concerns me is what kind of damage we have already done and what kind of effects it will have on those who follow us. Perhaps the problems my daughter face are undiagnosed because it is a reaction to environmental changes, something in the food or air, perhaps something in the exhaust of the machines she loves to watch as they dig.

I am quite comfortable in predicting that moving forward we are going to see an increase in various unexplained illness both of the physical and psychological kinds as the environment changes around us and, we change it. Some of the symptoms might even be positive for us as a species and perhaps by some stroke of luck there will be a mental switch clicked in some of us that give us access to develop the technological solutions we will need.

The neurologist watched my daughter play with me as she spoke to my wife about the situation and said that she didn't have to test her skills to see if she is developing well enough as she performed everything required in her normal play. I do not hide the fact that our daughter is unusually talented in some areas but, what if this is a symptom of environmental change, what if she has had the switch flicked and has some increased potential to solve problems in our collective future?

Perhaps that hidden in the mess that we have made the process of evolution and fight for survival has been experimenting randomly as it does and has found a solution to our destructive nature as a species. No matter what it is and who or what has caused the massive changes we are going to face, it is up to us to find the solutions or, go extinct trying.

We will have to wait and see which it will be but, doing what we have always done is not likely to improve our chances.

My prayers are with your daughter and your family. As a father of four and a grandfather of six there is nothing more precious than our offsprings. As my own children start their family I constantly wonder what is in store for them. As parents, we all want our children to be a little better off than we are. As parents much of that control has been wresteled from us as there are fewer and fewer situaions that we can manage., Yes, we have authority over the basic needs of life and the nurturing that takes place early on in life. But, it seems that there are so many issues spiraling out of control that we have very little command of. Issues of global warming, ethenic cleansing, pollutants that rain down on us, destruction of our precious resources, decimation of our oceans, attacks on morality, and manipulation of our food supply, are issues that are about to come to a head. It seems that at times we have totally lost control. Efforts to impact many of these issues are futile.
It is sad. Where are the real leaders hiding. As our elected officials attend to their own agendas in an effort to line their pockets, things continue their downward spiral. Where will the leadership come from that will be necessary to really make impactful changes.

Hopefully, as indivaduals we do what we can, but real change has to be commanded from the top. God Bless You and Your Family!

Efforts to impact many of these issues are futile. It is sad.

The efforts that have been tried so far are half-assed at best.

Where are the real leaders hiding.

This is what we need. No leaders but a global community that can fund and work together. See where this blockchain stuff could be headed?

Thanks for taking the time to comment well.

If what you are saying would ever come to pass in my life time, I would be able to rest rest in peace knowing that my offspring and all of humanity would be in a much better place.

Being a parent is a learning process. It adds many new meanings to ‘love’.

Complicates and simplifies at the same time.

Wow, wait and see and to be patient? As a parent, I know that this is the single most difficult thing to do when your own child is involved. It can be even worse when (like in your situation) there might not be a definite cause or problem. Sometimes kids have these mysterious things that they seem to grow out of...

Best of luck with the process of discovery... And she has one cute hat!

We are hoping that it will be a 'grow out of' kind of thing but at the same time, preparing just in case.

Always good to be prepared for the worst, good luck! Hope it is the passing variety.

I completely understand you because my son has petit mal seizure (abstract epilepsy). It has 3 years. He is now 7 years old. With medication he gets very well. we hope to cut the drugs next year and he has a normal life again… You must be strong enough to be your daughter, give her "love" and everything goes well!! You have an adorable daughter, I'm sure everything will go very well

THanks and I hope the coming off medication helps things for your son.

I thought that your daughter was not convulsing, I was praying a lot for her ... 2 months ago I remembered her and you very much, because my oldest daughter began attacks every morning. Always between 1 am and 3 am. ... sometimes she had the attack once ... other times she had it up to 4 times ... The attacks started with a small cough and then she could not breathe, my husband had to press his chest so that she I breathed again and then my daughter was very exhausted ... we stayed like that for 2 months, without sleeping ... We took her to several specialists, each with a different treatment. We prayed a lot for her, trusting that God would heal her ... All the doctors recipe antibiotics ... So she spent 2 months taking antibiotics (I do not like that because it's a lot of antibiotic for the organisms, she's barely 8 years old) ..

The second doctor we took her was a gastrologist and recipe him an antibiotic and food allergy tests. to see if the attacks were by eating flour.
In the end it turned out to be a bacteria in the lungs. An antibiotic treatment for 10 days ... after 5 days she not had the attacks ...

In short, the attacks stopped ... we thought it was the bacteria in the lungs ... but then, last month he hit the attack once again ... So ... that makes you think ... That day we went to the park ... and we thought about what we ate ... we ate pizza with oregano. and I had also prepared a chicken with sauce and oregano at home .. We thought that maybe it was the atmosphere of the park ... or maybe the oregano ... and I have not cooked anything else with oregano ... just in case it's that ... but there is uncertainty ... will it be the oregano or what will it really be?

(I hope you understand everything because I use the google translator and it changes some words)

Hopefully they can work out what is going on because it is a terrible feeling to be powerless in these things. All the best to your family.

We are part of this world and need to adapt to its changes which is ironic given that we influence the change in it so it seems like a never ending loop that struggles with balance and harmony. It is tough to take the wait and see approach as an anxious parent myself but I think we should trust science at times as ignorance sometimes lead us down the difficult path. I wish the best for your family!

which is ironic given that we influence the change in it so it seems like a never ending loop that struggles with balance and harmony.

Definitely is ironic but it is also quite exciting because if we can get our proverbial shit together, we could actually do some pretty cool things here.

I don't think waiting and seeing, doing nothing is usually the best way to go. Waiting and seeing has gotten us into all sorts of trouble, this mistaken idea that we cannot do anything... :/
That being said, I hope she's okay <3

I don't think so either when it comes to the big problems we face like environmental correction etc but for some medical stuff, it can be better before applying drugs.

Oh I agree, completely. I was thinking along the bigger scale too. No, you're right, when it comes to health stuff, definitely :)

I wish your daughter quick recovery.

thanks mate.

I hope your daughter improves and that those symptoms that have been presented to her are passengers, as you say, product of an adaptation to the environment. God bless you and your whole family.

Let's see how it all turns out but for the moment, she is a happy and smart kid at least.

Yeah, I think so too that you should wait and then act on the brief information so that later you can take the proper actions.
We are complex beings, we sacrifice for the greater good but not always. We also take into account things that can just benefit us. It depends upon nature and on the circumstances that mould us into something else.

Sometimes I hate waiting and seeing but sometimes that's all you can do >_< Hope the seizures you're preparing for never happen and everything is cool and cruisy after this including her body adapting out those allergies she has so it's easier for you all to travel if you want to travel :)

Also I love how you start all these things with something cute or what is deceptively a simple observation while you're out walking or whatever and it turns into this short essay on life, the universe and everything.
