Thinking Like a Stoic: Reprogramming Your Mind

in philosophy •  7 years ago

Hello Steemians,

Today I am touching on a subject that is a very important one, especially in today's age. Today we will talk a bit about reprogramming our minds so that we can accomplish our goals and find more peace of mind.

Of course to talk about this subject we run back a few thousand years to the teachings of the stoics.

Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy that flourished throughout the Roman and Greek world until the 3rd century AD. Stoicism is predominantly a philosophy of personal ethics which is informed by its system of logic and its views on the natural world. According to its teachings, as social beings, the path to happiness for humans is found in accepting that which we have been given in life, by not allowing ourselves to be controlled by our desire for pleasure or our fear of pain, by using our minds to understand the world around us and to do our part in nature's plan, and by working together and treating others in a fair and just manner.

It was founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early 3rd century BC. The Stoics taught that emotions resulted in errors of judgment which were destructive, due to the active relationship between cosmic determinism and human freedom, and the belief that it is virtuous to maintain a will that is in accord with nature. Because of this, the Stoics presented their philosophy as a way of life and they thought that the best indication of an individual's philosophy was not what a person said but how that person behaved. To live a good life, one had to understand the rules of the natural order since they taught that everything was rooted in nature.

Some of the most recognizable philosophers rooted themselves in the teachings of stoicism. Philosophers such as Seneca, Epictetus, Chrysippus, Diogenes, and of course the great philosopher king Marcus Aurelius.

Marcus Aurelius is often regarded as one of the best leaders of the last few thousand years. His diary reveals to us just what a wise man he was and the ideals which he sought to uphold.

He was a master of programming the mind so that he could rule an entire nation with morals and excellence. Time and again he he made it clear that our habits must be destroyed, that we must change our perception and realize the truths of life and what it means to be here.

In life we are only here for a short time in the scheme of things. Most of us enjoy many days here before it is our time but our time comes nonetheless and often people wish they had done more and had better priorities. We must reprogram our minds while we still have the time and the power. While we are still strong of mind and body we must exert our control over what is ours so that we may achieve a life we are truly happy with.

We often concern ourselves with things that don't really matter in the end and we regret it. We must be discerning in what we choose for ourselves and how we choose to behave. In life there are many things we cannot control which is why we must take heed and change ourselves to reach our full potential.

We must reorient ourselves to the truths of nature and change the way we live. You don't have to do anything particularly crazy to see big results. Sometimes it is as simple as thinking about things a little differently and acting from a new perspective. Make a list of the things you find truly important, think of real ways to achieve those things. Create schedules for yourself and stick to them, stop yielding to fear and the "whats ifs" of the future. Know that you have plenty of control over your life, cultivate your focus and go to work on the right things. Face the fears and find the magic of life on the other side.

Wishing you the best on your journeys of the mind.

May you conquer all your fears and realize all your truest goals.

Great post as always :)

Thanks @eureka9 !!!

Great post homie! Aurelius always hits the nail on the head. He was ages ahead of his time.

He is on point with it for sure! Never fails to lead the way

Great post. Stoicism is underrated these days.

Shouldn't a tag be stoicism?

Its a pretty important thing for sure! And I suppose but its a pretty tiny tag lol

I meant on your post. To replace 'blog' or 'writing' which are pretty generic.

Funny coincidence to have this pop up just a few weeks after I started reading MA's meditations myself. Made a lot of the same reflections as you @threebagsfull. While I think the sternness you mentioned is essential to understanding Stoicism, I think one should be careful about applying it to your own life just based on face value. The reason is I find MA/Soticism so appealing is that it utterly refuses a world of excuses. You're your own man making your own way through life's hardships. If you committ 100% and never cower over the task, you absolve yourself both in your own eyes and the eyes of the Gods. That's the short and sweet version.

However I have previously applied the same sternness to my own life and ended up being burnt out, worn down and when you take the time for recouperation added to what I actually did when I refused any "weakness", the total out-put isn't all that great. My best friend applied the same sternness to his own life, harsher, longer and less forgiving than me. He worked himself so hard he had an heart attack and died at fucking 28. He wanted to conquer the world, but he cannot any more... The doctors said was an issue wit his heart, and could have happened any time. Might have been years ago, might have been years a head. I knew him tho, and I saw how he over years got more and more tired, worked himself to the bone and not allowing time for pause and recuperation. So with this I read MA way differently now when I would have six-seven years ago. What I take from it now is that you should live every day so you can reflect back on it and say you're happy with the work you put in it. Things aren't changed over night, it's done a little bit every day. So as long as you keep your long term goals in mind and that life isn't a constant - it actually goes up and down - you will end up ahead when you both fight yourself AND listen to yourself.

Your will to fight is all and well, but if you refuse your own wisdom in doing so, you will not win in the long run. At least thats the way I see things :)

Oh most definitely. You must have balance in life and MA seemed to understand this. You can totally view stoicism as a great philosophy for being a hard worker but it is much more than that. I think the helenic philosophers enjoyed their leisure time and loved deeply. Too often we see the sternness of the philosophy but not the depth. I too saw it much differently at the beginning but now i see the softness of it too. You have to honor your wisdom

Wow. This is a mind opening post here! The things we can do when we are aware are unlimited

Stoicism has a lot to offer!

Amazing truth here. Keep it up.

Thanks @greatness96 I hope you will follow me and stay up to date on all my projects!

Very grounding post

Thanks @luceluck I hope you follow to see more awesome stuff from me!

I've been wanting to read more about stoicism as so many successful people seem to adopt that philosophy.

Is there a book you could recommend? I've heard that Letters from a Stoic is good.

Thanks in advance!

There are many great books out there! 2 i would recommend would be Meditations by Marcus Aurelius and The Tao of Seneca.

If you have a kindle you can find the Marcus Aurelius book for free or for $1!

Awesome, added to my Learning Board, thanks!

Cool, added them to my reading list, thanks!

awesome piece

Thanks m8! Hope you will follow me for more awesome posts!

I love the thought processes of the Ancients. They are still extremely relevant now. I've yielded more power of Self by continuing down the rabbit hole of ancient Hermetic philosophy & Cosmological Alkemy...

This article is just so interesting. I'm one to always be telling people we must look at life in general in a new perspective. If something did not work the first time don't let it discourage you to try another avenue. Also, many do not take criticism very well. It should not be analyzed as a negative but a positive to have the wiggle room to readjust and re represent ourselves in a new light . Oh my I was inspired to comment on this thank you so much for sharing.
