Distributed Denial of Service (aka DDOS) attack... beyond computers... it's in your mind

Some of you are likely familiar with the term DDOS as it applies to computers and networks today. It is a common thing these days for such an attack to take down sites on the internet temporarily, or to clog routers at some parts of the internet.

Today I was having a discussion with some friends/coworkers and was teasing one about a brain eating amoeba. My boss responded asking if I was sure I wasn't talking about the media. I responded by saying that I think the media might be closer to a DDOS attack.

Then I thought about it. Right now life can feel like a DDOS attack. Our brains are daily being slammed with so many signals. This also is a new way to consider some propaganda techniques. Mainly I am referring to repetition. Repeat a lie enough and it eventually becomes true. I see it daily in most of the media. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. The thing is that in a rational world this constant repetition is not really necessary unless it is for propaganda purposes. The things that are repeated generally are not backed by any sources that can be verified, challenged, etc. They are opinion/speculation passed as fact. They are repeated over and over again often with some highly charged emotional context and people suck it in and often if they are not aware what is happening their minds are overwritten with a new TRUTH that actually was not true at all.

So I see this as resembling a Distributed Denial of Service attack coupled with perhaps a Buffer Overflow. For those of you not familiar with DDOS. The idea is that you have multiple computers and devices at DIFFERENT locations (thus distributed) blast a single target with requests. Have them do this rapidly. If you do this from enough machines at the same time then eventually you will begin to exceed the internet bandwidth/capacity for the target site. It will become increasingly unresponsive. It is not DOWN as it is actually running still, but it is so flooded with requests that it might as well be down and the requests that it does manage to process might be really slow. In fact they get so slow that most machines that decide the site is down do so simply because a response took too long. The site is still up, but it is so over saturated with requests that it is taking far too long to respond to legitimate requests.

So does this describe the media and their assault on our minds?

As to the buffer overflow. In computer terminology a program could hold so much data as it comes in that it will process as fast as it can. Yet sometimes that is more information than the location that was set aside to handle it. You could picture this like a hallway outside of a door. People line up inside the hallway and then the door opens and the next person in line is processed. This hallway would be similar to a BUFFER and it can only hold so many people. So a buffer overflow occurs when more information was sent to the buffer than it was designed to handle. Depending upon the code and how it was written it often will just drop that information, however sometimes that buffer is simply a pointer in computer memory. So even though it is too much it splats it down. That is like more people than that hallway can hold getting dropped instantly into place... they OVERFLOW into adjoining rooms, etc.

Sometimes this flaw can be used as an exploit so you can intentionally overlfow a buffer and have it so the data that flows over into adjoining areas can end up written in an executable area. You can use this to make the target computer run programs it did not intend to run.

So the media and propaganda could also be looked at in those terms. They are pounding people relentlessly and trying to overflow your buffer so they can reprogram your mind.

That might be the only thing I get to ramble about today. I'll be racking up some servers and such today.

EDIT: And I have a typo in the tag philosophy, but I cannot correct that at this point.

I'm actually working on a similar post about the information war and how it relates to many spiritual and other conflicts. It's insane just how much misinformation is out.

Check your brain for:

  1. malware(double think and misleading registry entries :D),
  2. viruses(negativity in general also unfounded positivity anything that skews your views from hat is really there and could actually exist without the noise),
  3. trojans(trust your providers, but know what is going on :D everybody has an agenda 80% of the time ),

Update and Flush your cache, :D just scratch bullshit in general, disconnect from the noise and scripts :)

Easier said than done :)

Yes. THIS.
Also, corrupted files... throttling (holding back the good content) and other various techniques and issues arise. This is why a walk in nature is such a good thing. Or even better a few days away with no digital input, no crowds, no overload. Like emptying the hard drive of unnecessary files. Removing the clutter from the desktop, etc.

Bump :)

Interesting and very worthy analysis... I like this, and largely agree. Put people in a state of perpetual overwhelm, to the point where they end up going "WHATever" and tuning out.

I'm not sure how to phrase it in computer terms, but my response tends to be to employ "countermeasures" towards as many influential sources as possible...

Which, for me, means writing pieces that expose "underlying motivations" and broadcast them as much as possible. Of course, I'm just one small voice saying "It doesn't HAVE to be this way." Makes me not very popular with Facebook friends who accuse me of "pouring water" on arguments involving a lot of name calling...

You're messing with your FB friend's safe spaces.

Well, yeah... the thing that saddens me is how many people seem almost "addicted" to being in the middle of an emotional argument, rather than simply exploring and arriving at solutions. Evidently, a lot of people find "name calling" more rewarding that exploring answers....

Education system doesn't really teach them why they shouldn't do that. In fact these days the education system seems to encourage that.

I've always disliked the group think you get in class, everybody that is different is bad and he's not normal :D it rarely happened but It seems like a trend these days, clothes are more important than the content of character :)

Nice comparison. Overwhelming a target's systems with looping, error-filled programming sure sounds an awful lot like the MSM.

@dwinblood You're Trending

Yeah this is the best a post of mine has ever done.

Well deserved, Sir. I noticed this post has brought some DDOS. Was watching the mood in the room with more popcorn. Looks like the SBD distribution has been paused and recalculated into additional STEEM & SP. I have been diversifying my account in thirds.
33%STEEM
33%SP
33%SBD
So no matter which third rises or falls first.
I'm positioned evenly to counter.

Now back to your visuals, you know I notice them...
Please give us all a gift of your proper explanation of the RED and the GREEN men in your photo image One on the Left and One on the Right, they both seem to be pointing towards the same place.

(Shares Popcorn)

Red guys are people DOS attacking, multiple shows it as Distributed. The Green Guy is a legit user trying to reach the site and likely having problems due to the DOS attack.

sure took a while and I too have missed some good votes these days, the old dog is up there too :) on with the show :D

I check tending page once a month maybe :D

Ahh...TOG

(makes more popcorn)

The show continues :D

(grabs popcorn)

This is a good one!

If this does NOT wake U up!
U have been DDOS

Say thank you Tavistock!!! I kept seeing DDOS and thinking it's the Dept of Defense (shows how smart I am.)

Not a matter of smart, a matter of exposure. DOS might make someone thing Department of Signals or something like that if they are unfamiliar with what DDOS actually stands for.

A DOS attack does the same thing Denial of Service by flooding a site from a single location. Those can usually be mitigated by blocking the address it is coming from. DDOS though is spread all over the place so blocking an address does not work too well.

well you can block the input which is the goal of the attacker anyways :D

Cheers to abit, I have a 2/3rd vote from him :D always makes me value my comments :D

Blocking the input works with a DOS attack. IT doesn't work so well with a DDOS. Since they come from all over the place, and are generally infected machines being zombied into the cause.

Kind of like infected minds being zombied into the cause.

I get it after reading your article...thanks, as JS Mill would say- I've replaced error with truth (while we're on the subject of philosophjy ;) )

The J was me trying to use an English/Spanish hybrid today. The J is to be pronounced like H as in Jose. :P (actually just a typo... but we can joke)

LOL~

Well done, Sir. I noticed this post has brought some DDOS. Was watching the mood in the room with more popcorn.
