I Almost Got Scammed By @anoniam: Ban Him From All Discord Servers. He is a PHISHER

anonnnnnn.JPG

I met @anoniam earlier in the month when he came to me requesting to do some coding work for our group @slothicorn.

Obviously, I want to warn everyone about this person, and hopefully also save people from loss. But I am very disappointed, and a bit pissed off that I wasted my time talking and giving advice to a criminal.

He told me that he had researched who had a high reputation and it was obvious he was interested in getting a reputation by doing work. This admission on his part did make me suspicious, but I am willing to give people a chance in the beginning. My suspicions began to grow for a number of reasons, but I was extremely alarmed to find out via @neoxian that not only is @anoniam a suspicious person, he is a phisher, as it appears he has stolen the account @khoa and who knows what other accounts. I narrowly escaped being scammed in several ways, which I will explain.

Please read both posts by @neoxian to see how @anoniam admitted to phishing: https://steemit.com/scam/@neoxian/phishing-attack-scam-attempt-update-anoniam-is-the-phisher

https://steemit.com/bank/@neoxian/phisher-tried-to-scam-me-today-could-not-outsmart-a-bank

A few days ago @anoniam asked me for 300 Steem. He said he would repay me 350 Steem. It was at this point I began to have suspicions because his earlier work all revolved around coding projects. I asked him many times why he was not contributing to Utopian, as that is the most obvious way to earn as a programmer. He said the rules were too strict, or something of that sort. His answer seemed off to me.

Ok, when he asked me for money, I had to ask him questions about how he was going to earn. He told me arbitrage, which is buying on one exchange and selling on another. When I heard this information, I began to think lesser of him because doing this kind of activity doesn't generate reputation, social clout or anything. It's a hollow way to make money, and while making money is not a bad thing, the way you decide to earn tells a lot about one's inner nature.

Once I learned that arbitrage was the way he was going to earn, I realized I wanted nothing to do with this.

But the scary part is that I almost loaned it to him. It was while I was thinking on it, that I decided to ask Neoxian about it. I learned that Anoniam had told Neoxian that he (anoniam) had a good reputation in Slothicorn, and that he was a mod in our group. This set off a red flag because while it's true that Anoniam had done one coding project for us (thankfully I never used the code...I'll go into this shortly), I had not made up my mind about his trustworthiness yet. He was so new, and there were a number of things I found disturbing about his lack of history.... Let me detail my suspicions in the hopes that you can learn what to look for in people:

1: His Github history is brand-new.

After he created some code for us (and communities) to use in order to simplify the key permissions, I asked to see it on Github. I asked him if he creates open source code. He said he doesn't make open source code. I asked why. This was the first red flag. Creating closed source code seems extremely fishy to me. But he did release the code on Github finally. Here's the second red flag: after I asked him to make an adjustment to the code, fixing one thing, I found out he didn't release this fix on Github. Instead, he sent me the code directly in a file.

I didn't like this.

I actually never opened the file. When I didn't use the code he made, he seemed anxious, and he asked me if I was planning on using it. His hurried nature, mixed with some anxiety was another red flag. I told him I would look into using the code in a few weeks (I was planning to use it!). But I wanted to wait, mainly because the code was not on Github, and that made me nervous, knowing that he sent the code directly to me. He probably had the secret code in there, planning to steal our keys! I AM SO GLAD I TRUSTED MY GUT INSTINCTS ON THIS ONE!

If @anoniam is in your Discord Server, ban him now. He is a thief.

Always ask lots of questions and analyze carefully someone's behavior. It's quite difficult for people to pretend to be a certain way for a long time. Never trust anyone who enters your group in the beginning. I made the mistake of trusting @anoniam in our Discord Server too quickly, after he did one coding project for us. This was a mistake. But luckily, @neoxian and myself asked questions, and also communicated with each other about this person. We are lucky this time, but as you can see, I narrowly escaped being scammed IN TWO WAYS! I could have lent him the 300 Steem, and I also could have used that code which I suspect has been coded to steal active keys. This could have turned out very badly.

I have learned a lesson.

6 months is a good amount of time to get to know people in order to trust them. @anoniam, please leave our community. You're not welcome here.

I delegated 20 steem to anoniam.
I had a conversation with him some time ago.
He wanted to do something big for which the community will remember him for good.
I am really confused because he didn't seem to be a phisher for me.
@stellabelle

yeah, he was trying to convince me the whole time that he was doing good. Please take away that 20 Steem delegation. He is not to be trusted. Look at the facts.

that is nice of you to do that. However, you may put your Steem into someone else.....I do have a suggestion: @steemgh is one.

He was having bandwidth issues when he was about to make his first post and then he asked me to delegate 20 steem and I did so because he seemed a really nice person.

He told me that I can undelegate my sp after his post was published and I did so.

Thanks for the warning btw.

Also, even if it was open-source, it would have not been a guarantee that the compiled program he sent you was safe. You'd have to verify the integrity of the program's code and compile it on your own just to be sure.

I had a trusted programmer friend verify the code.

People can be so mean, they won't work hard to reap the fruits of their labour but would prefer to steal someone's toil!

Even in my own group, we are just hearing different sad stories, the last was someone's 132 SBD that was transfered without trace.

This is a call for consciousness, thank you dear @stellabelle for sharing!

Steemit is getting much attention now and people want to do whatever they can to earn.

Phishing links through comments have become a rampant link of late and I fear for people who hastily click on links, these guys usually use url shorteners to keep things out of sight.

Anon.... I don't see how someone who wants to be anonymous now, wants to get main stream attention by helping the global community. I think we need a way to drain the bandwidth of Know hackers and phishing accounts.

This particular one seems to be smarter and I am sure more will find more advanced ways to do this soon

Oh my goodness😮. Thank God you didn't fall for it. He's a real thief.
I wonder why people wake up and decide to scam good people of their hard earned money.
He deserves to be kicked out, to serve as a scale goat for all the others scammers here.

@neoxian wrote about this son of a B***H
Who the hell is he and why the hell has the rep not gone down to —50 . This bastard and the likes of him has got some whales and witnesses working day and night just to protect this wonderful platform and save its wonderful users from the hands of scammers like this hell boy .

Thanks @stellabelle for the warning , and I’m using this time out to spread this warning to all users until this scum is irrelevant on this platform, share and Resteem this post to safe your future and the future of others on this platform. Let’s all fight against phishing so we’d keep this platform clean and safe for generations to come . Thanks again @stellabelle

yeah, it's important to share information. Thanks for helping. Being vigilant is the best way to protect each other.

Simultaneously wow and "of course". Glad you didn't get fooled.

One of the prices we pay for the freedom is vigilance. We pay a fee to banks so that we don't have to be so vigilant and they can undo the stupid things we do.

Whilst it is a pain and quite inefficient to have to wade through the scams doing due diligence I do hope that they don't regulate the crypto world. It's good to have a very free place where creativity can be let loose and massive progress can happen unhindered. Kind of like a real world sandbox.

*edit did to didn't doh!

Thank for sharing this experience with us. I know this will save many people from @anoniam and the likes

I heard a little about this in the PAL discord channel today. The problem is, even after removing him and cutting all ties with him. He'll still return in another clothing with a different name and face. People just have to be careful and look out for red flags just like you did because these criminals do evolve everyday.

People suck!!!!

yeah

Damn. That is messed up.

People are just terrible. Thanks for letting us know @stellabelle

That is really bad. Some persons just want to get rich quick in few months on steemit. Hard work pays and he should have joined Utopia to make better things for the world. Some just want to use their skills to steal from others. Have you reported him to @steemcleaner

yeah

I really don't know why people spend so much time, energy and brains trying to con other people when they can use the same time and effort to make an honest living! I am glad you didn't fall in his trap.

very sad why such people spoiling the community atmosphere

This is a wake up call, we should beware of scammer and be vigilant, thank you for sharing your experience.

Good on you for sharing your experience and warning others about unsavory people within the community. I don't understand why people have to try to take advantage of others when it is easy enough to make money in this world honestly. I'm sorry this happened to you.
Ivy

Ohhh. Did Khoa lose his account? Whether could he get the account back? :| So sad to hear your news!

it appears that the scammer has khoa's posting key. the info is in Neoxian's post.

Thank you @stellabelle. I've read the Neoxian's post. Thank God Dang has revoked. By the way, I should inform other Vietnamese about this problem!

articles are very interesting friends @stellabelle

I hope the @steemcleaners will acknowledge this @anoniam now before he will spoil the name steemit has built or giving them bad reputation out there. thank you @stellabelle for this vital information, @anoniam get out of here now!

Look at the good point at least it was not as worse as the zeatrul incident, It was only thanks to the compensation fund were i got 70% of my funds. :)

Made me think of that guy, too

The guys is still "active" he is selling his votes on minnowbooster and withdrawing them to exchange

It is always good not to make decisions while in hurry, the story would have ended the other way round if you dont apply some cautions, I'm glad you don't fall victim and thanks for sharing this, I'm sure it would help us all to be careful with him and other scammers like him, because we have so many of them around us.

OMG. I have already seen a post of @neoxian where he mentioned the damn scammer who tried to scam him. Looks like the asshole has spread his wings. Let's say we cut his wings and kill him now.

A member who visits my blog nearly everyday, long time follower; he got scammed out of something like 600SBD. Bastards...

I still think it would be wise to put a system in place that allows us to responsibly vote people off of the platform. Of course, they'll just find a way around it like everything else...

I get that, but the trouble is it means good people can be voted off for having non pc views - ie censorship.

That's why I added the word responsibly. It would be irresponsible to vote people off for thinking a certain way.

Yes but that's where it gets really complicated. For example if someone posts something that questions mob rule they would likely get pushed off, even though mob rule is often irrational. Mobs believe they are being responsible and the people they are persecuting irresponsible. A good example of this is the recent metoo movement. If someone questions it they get decimated.

This is the tough price that comes with free speech. If we're truly going to be for free speech then we have to recognise that there'll be many things said which are totally against our sensibilities. This includes the scammers, people of opposing politics, religion and more.

There is this crazy war going on here on steem between someone called something like Haejin and berniesanders. They vote each other's stuff down and pound each other. Making accusations etc. I've no idea who's right/wrong but they'd both be off steem if it were possible to remove people I'm sure.

No, we wouldn't. We bring more attention to this platform than most of that trash you see on the Trending page.

And, I'm right, he's wrong. There's no doubt about that.

Lol geez you're quick to respond bruv! I've no idea what's going on with you both. Hope it gets worked out.

yeah, it sucks. I can't believe i was chatting with a fucking scammer for weeks. This is disturbing...

Trust has to be earned, it's never a given. I'm not paranoid but I am guarded. That's probably why I stick to myself so much. People...

OMG!!!
Pishing has become so rampant these days, its dissapointing.
Thanks for this post, I've resteemed to alert others

yeah

you're right. he cheated on my friend!!

What on earth! Wow. Thanks for the information. Well done for not using the code and being suspicious. Very useful info for us newbies.

Good info. @anoniam on the shit list. Damn people trying to steal stuff......

Good post I like with your post @stellabelle , may be useful for us all for beginners

HMMM, don’t even know who to trust. Taking my time to read a lot through security conscious posts. Don’t want to fall a victim of these scammers. Thanks a lot for this post..

Thanks for the warning. Some days I am glad I am not on discord so avoid meeting phishers.

mmmh this is one hell of a phiser, you see this is what we talked about bad reputation, really you think at first you are smart but when hell broke lose on you, gadamm, kets becareful really, some came to help the community others came to steal from same community.

For a while I have forgotten there could be scammers here. Sad turn of event, people could have made more in the right circumstance only if they could be more patient. Thanks for the heads up.

I am about three posts in and this gets crazier and crazier. Has anyone figured out how he got the keys from the guy he was using to phish with yet?

sir be alert & take action on them

Nice post!

Good on you for making the community aware Stella!

Unfortunately, there are people out there who are wlling to take advantage of any generous spirit they can get their claws into. Hopefully this post will help at least one person not be taken for a ride on this.

I can't even fathom asking people for money here. Upvotes are all the generousness I could ever ask for. Unless of course I am doing legitimate work (like I do for @curie). I guess that is part of the mentality that there are people out there who need it far worse than I do. I dunno. I don't give lightly, but I will give to a cause I believe in. I suppose that karma will come back to me should I be in a place of extreme need somewhere in the future.

That's really all the generosity I can ask for.

Shame on this guy for trying to take advantage!

Thank to share this scammer post .

Steemit is such a land of opportunity and hope for so many. Disappointed and disgusted by damage people like this do to the communities around them.

I’m also a bit alarmed now as I did not think anything of the name reading another blog about this. Seeing the profile picture that rings a bell somehow. Drawing a blank on how I’ve come to recognize that profile and the way that name is spaced out like it is. As such I gave this a resteem.

I can only hope you guys/gals come up with internal controls to try and safe guard yourself the best you can. Sadly a lot of wonderful apps and things going on in this platform need to give their own security a very hard look at. They provide such wonderful things to the platform but increase vulnerable of the people as well.

Thank u for the information everyone will be aware to that user because of your post. Thanks again.

What!!!!! Gush. While people are working hard to earn, some people are just looking for an easy way out by stealing other people's sweat? What d hell does it take them to work hard instead of stealing and telling lies up and down?. I wish there was a way these hackers and phishers will be completely flushed out of our honourable community.

once my friend also scammed by a culprit and the culprit grabbed her earning via bittrex she was fool to trust that unknown culprit it was a lesson for her.

Thanks for the news. Sharing with others.

Also, even if it was open-source, it would have not been a guarantee that the compiled program he sent you was safe. You'd have to verify the integrity of the program's code and compile it on your own just to be sure

Thanks for the warning. Good post!

Hey @stellabelle,
Thanks for the warning.
I'm happy that you didn't fall for this thief.

Thats terrible, good job for recognizing this and not falling for this scam

While I don't disagree with what you're saying here, has anyone looked at the code? Reputation is all any of us really has online. Without knowing that the code was designed to exploit keys, you shouldn't be saying that. He might just be another hungry third world hustler, not used to English, sounding abrupt and in a hurry. I'm not saying this isn't so, or that people should trust him, but there must be some way to open his code in a sandbox to prevent damage and see what's in it, before making accusations that could stop someone earning a badly needed living for whoever is depending on him. People are desperate for all kinds of reasons, sometimes, it's genuine need.

He tried to scam a loan from me using a stolen key. What more proof do you need?

Like I said, I'm not arguing it's not true. And I'm already on the lookout. I was just referring to the code.

Thanks @stellabelle for bringing attention to this issue and protecting the community. As I read your post, I am amazed by your knack for id-ing red flags so quickly. We have got a smart one here folks!

Upvoted, followed & resteem-ed!

Resteemed to keep others safe. Thanks for advice @stellabelle

thank you for sharing this story, and for trusting your intuition, this is the compass that saves us all and communication, exposure support, <3

@stellabelle
Thanks for sharing your experiences on this guy I wonder why @anoniam didn't respond to your allegations here which goes to show something is wrong his side.
Steemit has loads of scammers who claim holier than thou and scream against what @anoniam did. Agree with you never to trust any person. I posted in two trending spam, scam going on in steemit as such we must keep exposing any deviants here regularly. Glad for what you did. Keep such coming ma'am & glad you didn't fall prey.
