The Old Dog Reveals: Ok, Ok, I Admit it, I Have a Phobia!steemCreated with Sketch.

Spiders creep me out! Does that make me less of a man? Hmmm I wonder? but....

Perhaps I've found at least a partial solution. Let me explain.

I took this shot in my garden yesterday but how can having taken it help me?

What is a Phobia Anyway?

I give way to an online dictionary

"An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something"

Using this as a definition perhaps I don't have phobia. Let's look at the two adjectives describing the aversion

1.) extreme: I wouldn't call my aversion extreme. It's not like I run away from them screaming but when there is one in my house I want it out....now! Grab a jar, trap it and out it goes. Ok, Ok sometimes I squish them!

2.) irrational: I think maybe I have a good reason for MY aversion. Some spiders bite and some are even poisonous. When I was 10 years old my parents sent me to a summer camp. In the middle of the night one of the other boys woke up screaming. He had been bitten by a spider and a welt the size of a halved orange grew on his arm. Off to to the emergency room he went leaving the rest of us dazed, confused and scared! Don't ask if I slept that night!

So I ask, is my aversion irrational? I think not!

So Then What's my Partial Solution?

I say partial becasue I'm not expecting a miracle cure but surely I should improve! So here's what I have in mind:

  1. Gain more knowledge. I need to be able to identify all the types of spiders to know if they bite and whether the bite is poisonous or not.
  2. I need to have more appreciation. After all, some of their webs are amazing creations and when you look at them up close as in my photo above there is a lot of beauty there!

Here is The Other Side of The Same Spider!

Yes there is beauty there as well and I can admire this creature's handy work.

What Do You Say?

  • Do you have any phobias?
  • Have you been able to overcome any?
  • Can you identify the spider shown above?

Until next time,

Beautiful, in a creepy way. We’re you scared?

No, we had a photo shooting togheter.... she was also not scared at all :-)))

If you took those pic you're surely on a good way to win your phobia! :)

Let’s hope so!

I'm here for the prize.

Just kidding.

Yes I have a phobia, and I got mine in a similar fashion to how you got yours.

As a child I used to go visit my father's friends at a local University. Several of us children would go up and down the elevator all day long. There was a little tiny window on that elevator.

I ended up getting stuck in that elevator for something like 6 hours. The little window was just barely showing so that I could see out of it but nobody could see in to know that I was in there. To this day I can not stand confined spaces. I think a lot of the phobias that we have are actually based on incidents that happened during childhood.

However, just recognizing them doesn't mean you can make them go away.

Liked your story. I'll give you a nice upvote as a prize!

Hurray! That is a good prize!

Well yes I have a phobia for spiders too , I just don’t like the scary body the legs , so actually I really don’t like them and they scare me 😳, I probably scare them too 😊

Good to know that I’m not alone!

Not fond of spiders or snakes @kus-knee... but are they are probably not true phobias; more likely experiential, based on when we lived in Kenya when I was little and the crawly critters were really dangerous.

I remember once the groundskeeper came to the front door looking alarmed and told us "There's a black mamba in the house!" In due course, a 7-foot snake was extracted... the venom can kill an adult in 20 minutes and they are pretty aggressive....

Now YOU have stories to tell. A black mamba in the house!

I don't think you have a phobia. It is normal not to like certain things, beings ... some to provoke fear! Some are afraid of knives.
Nor do I like certain beings, especially insects. I think that many people have this embarrassment.
It is not accidental that most horror films are used insects ...
Your questions:

  1. I do not think I have a real phobia
  2. Fear of height ... I'm struggling with it.
  3. This is a spider with a cross, I do not know the scientific name. It has a cross on the back and the net that weave is specific. The bite is quite painful.
I have some in the garden and we can ignore each other. Of course I could remove them but I think everyone has the right to his life. (I fight with my wife who has a spider phobia and would like to kill everyone)

Thanks for your great answers and encouragement!

My pleasure. It was an exciting posting and an unexpected subject but close to the events of our lives. It is especially challenging for readers to answer questions. I like.

I love the photos, they are great!! I don't fear spiders, but I will not play with them or handle them with my hands. My wife was bitten by an unknown spider (we did not even see it, but the doctor said it was a spider bite) and ended up in hospital and a lot of infection in the wound, she still has a rather big scar where the wound formed.

You're scaring me! You are wise not to handle them. Poor wife of yours!

@kus-knee,
Actually I can't identify that spiders, belongs that that sub domain and etc! But I could tell you, when I am at the topic of Spider yeah I agree it's something near to phobias situation!
I hate this creature, moreover I can't overcome that fear, so I am going into aggressive mode when it happens! Finally it might be the end of life story of that spider! So it's better I avoid them as much as I can! It works, coz I won't hurt them, but my fear could corner me into do something bad on them!
By the way it's a nice photography, but I hate it!

Cheers~

"I can't overcome that fear, so I am going into aggressive mode when it happens!"

I understand!

I don't have a phobia about spiders but after seeing that thing I could get one pretty quick! My feelings about spiders is that dead spiders don't bite!!!

Haha good one!

Great Question sir @kus-knee.

  1. Yes, I have a phobia. My phobia is centipede
  2. I overcame my fear by cleaning the places favored by the Centipede.
  3. I have searching on google and I guess the type of spider is Araneus diadematus Diadem.

Am I right sir ?

Posted using Partiko Android

I don't know what type it is but I'll check what you found.

I am in Europe, it was in my garden and it looks like the one that you mentioned.

Not an expert, but I've always assumed most humans have a natural aversion/fear of snakes and spiders. Although most aren't dangerously poisonous, it still seems like a rational fear/aversion to me ;-)

Good point!

I think the spider might be a Cross Orb-weaver @kus-knee. And now I'll probably have nightmares about that!

i haven't had any phobias but I'm not keen on a lot of insects and reptiles and heights. 😊

Yes that's another acceptable name.

Araneus diadematus Diadem.

Kill their prey with venom which liquifies it slowly. In the meantime they wrap it in silk and save it for later. Rarely bite humans they say!

Ugh!!!!!!

Ugh!!!!!! Indeed @kus-knee, 😂

  • Recently after a short visitation to a tourist attraction in my country, I found out that I had phobia for heights.

My legs were all weebling like that of a Supercentenarian.

Till this day, other than phobia of heights and maybe failure, I don't think I have other phobias.

  • How do I work on my height phobia?
I pretty much just avoid stepping to higher grounds.

  • I'm afraid I'm not too good with spiders, I don't think I can recognize the spider in your picture.

I basically don't familiarize my self with them.
Once I see one, I squish it
No time for pleasantries.

"Once I see one, I squish it
No time for pleasantries."
Good one!

Smiles.

Thanks

Experts are still not sure what is causing the fear of spiders. Still, there are several theories. One of the most common theories has been put forward by evolutionist psychologists. This view suggests that our ancestors a survival technique for the Araknafobia. Although many spiders are dangerous and many do not pose a threat to humans, fear of spiders may have made people more inclined to survival and recruitment. And you can get rid of it by therapy from it. My mommy has a fear of spiders. there is. I know how scary this is. As for the perfect shot in your photo! That's magical, @kus-knee ! You've captured the precious world of the spider so wonderfully. Congratulations and warm greetings!

Agreed!

Brrrrrr.. I'm also scared of spiders! It's getting better now but when I see one at home I want it out NOW. And I scream until my husband comes and release it carefully, LOL! I haven't heard of any poisonous spiders in Switzerland but they are gigantic here!

I am a little bit claustrophobic. It makes me crazy to go in a cave OR when I'm stuck in a lift. I feel like I can't breathe and am about to faint. I try to overcome it by breathing deeply and thinking about something what makes me happy but it doesn't always help.

Good to know that I'm not alone!

Absolutely not :) I believe that most of people are not comfortable with spiders.. look at how many legs they have! :)

I love spiders. If i catch a fly or mosquito,i always feed spiders with them. :)

Sounds like an interesting hobby?

It is.Try it. :)

I think those horror movies can contribute to phobias. One must step by step actively face each phobia if only in baby steps. Perhaps then we could save ourselves unnecessary therapy sessions. LOL Thanks @kus-knee.

Yes, yes baby steps, baby steps!

I don’t have a phobia for snakes, but for spiders I do. They are small but can still give you a nasty bite. Sure they have the same right as us to walk the earth, but still I would refer if they do so as far as possible from me

Agreed!

Not scared of them but I certainly don't like them on me or surprising me in my bed. Here we are infested with wolf spiders and they get everywhere and in everything. The spider you posted has different coloring but reminds me in shape of our garden spiders here.

Spiders in the bed? It happened to us yesterday. Not a good start to the morning!

Haha! Agreed! ;)

Take care of your family and thanks.

Common name: Common spider escupidora

Description: This species is not very showy and slow movements. It measures 6 millimeters in length and has eyes arranged in pairs. The vaulting of the shield is very evident, as shown in the illustration.

They are yellowish brown with black marks on the shield and abdomen and stripes of the same color on the legs. Like all spitting spiders, the female of this species carries the egg sac between the chelicerae. They do not weave fabrics, and they live under stones, caves or buildings.

From my dear friend, I have a psychoterror to all the spiders

Yes that fear is reasonable!

Wao very interesting photography, phobia or the fear of spiders is the oldest and most common phobia in the Western culture.some peoples like spiders and some peoples not,Thanks for this great information of phonia,I really like your post,

Thanks. What about you? Do you like them?

Yes i like phobia,

That is one ugly spider

Yes, well ugly but also beautiful!

Yeah I have phobia but it's for reptiles. I hate them just like the devil hahaha.
My friend told me how he was bitten by a centipede and I was almost freezing while listening to him because I was just imagining if it happened to me..
Well, luckily he was treated before it got worse.

Why, what type of centipede? I didn't know that they bite too!

there are spiders that are poisonous as you say your friend so you have to take care of yourself and not trust you, my phobia is the snakes and the bees I have panic

You we need to be careful!

First of all yeah there are things that does makes us stay aware in a way

While I am not that fond of Heights that I must say

I was not at first but as time went by I recognized that I am not very good at heights.

Well yeah trying to get over it lets see what happens :)

Heights seems to be right up there with spiders and snakes!

I understand that feeling, @kus-knee! And even though I don't know what kind of spider it is, I can see it's big. I do have a phobia! I'm afraid of cats. Like you, I have a childhood experience that marked me for the rest of my life. When I was little, a cat jumped on me and nailed me. From that moment on I can't have a cat around because it gives me the creeps and I start to sweat. I even cried! And you know what's worse? The cats are after me, they're after me! I think I was a witch in a previous life. Hahahahaha. Happy afternoon!

Cats? That's a new one but understandable considering your experience!

spiders are very beautiful with nets to catch their prey. I like it. perfect spider photo, thank you for sharing.

Yes they can be beautiful and are great engineers!

Yes. You examined it carefully, I was amazed by you.

At least for you it is just spiders. My list is pretty long and covers all creepy looky insects and animals

I feel better now!

Great shot from the amazing spider👍🤗

Just used my phone!

I don't think i have phobia especially with insects. Although if a bug is near me and someone let me know i will probably try to go a bit far from it or kill it :P I may even yell bit! I think that is called ''getting disgusted"

For instance get i see a cockroach even though i know it can't do anything to me i just wanna run away from it especially when i am not wearing a shirt or a shoe to kill it. The thought of touching my body give me the creeps.

A phobia i may have is snakes... Except the fact that they are slippery disgusting things they can bite you :P and even worst some of them have venom... which in a way is reason to be cautious and afraid of them :P

I can't say i had overcome it cause i don't really know if it is consider a phobia but i have the mindset of "if it happened, it happened"

the only solution is flamethrower!

"the only solution is flamethrower!" Good one!

I am not afraid of spiders, they are really very beautiful beings, though many of them poisonous. Recently in my garden there was a large size striped spider. True, I didn't know it is dangerous or not and did not come close to what the photo turned out blurry, but I think anyway you can see it larger sizes.

photo_2018-08-23_22-39-29.jpg

On the Internet, I found out that the spider is called Argiopa and it is dangerous to humans.

Yes they are beautiful!

That is no Phobia, that is a MAN KILLER!!! lol

Yikes!

Excellent images and information that you have given us, to be smiling, I have no idea to what spider this spider belongs.
I have foxes to the scorpions, but not for me, but for my granddaughter who is too young to know the danger that these animals represent
It is overcome as you well decide, acquiring information and arbitrating the necessary means to prevent them from appearing
Thank you very much for letting us know these pictures and all your information
I wish you a great day

Thanks!

wow dear such a great discription and very beauty full picture made a perfect post. all thing done so beauty full great job dear

Thanks a lot!

most heartly welcome dear

thats sooo scary kus-knee soo you have spider phobia ?? btw the web is greatly captured as we can see the focus of camera is amazing 😍

I used my phone by I tried my best! :)

which phone is it ?? hot camera man 📷

hahah same pinch old dog you know it ;p

Pinch? That I wouldn't mind.

Don't worry, I hate them too!

I'm not alone? Good!

I'm on your side with this one...

Spiders creep me out. Unfortunately, they are probably just as scared of us as we are of them, but we have the capability to end their life far more easily then they can end ours. (except for a few like the black widow) But I guess if you also think of how many flies and mosquitoes and other insects they help manage, they really do "pay their rent" hahaha. I just wish they looked a little bit cuter

aa.jpg

The one in your photo looks cuddly!

That is the different kind of spider

Yes we have now identified it!

So it's dangerous or not

I was enthralled by this handsome, although I would be afraid to take it into the hands :) You have not written for a long time, friend @kus-knee! Has your holiday been over?

It's danger for Human

I definitely agree that more exposure and maybe 'safe' exposure like video and photos are good.

I don't have a spider phobia, in fact funny story I have a spider that made a web on my dashboard of my car and I've left her there all Summer, she has been catching bugs for me, and I smile at her when I'm driving about.

But, some things give me a bit of phobia like I'm not a fan of centipedes.

You are big photographer.I also like your photography
