Phonetics-Definition
Phonetics is the linguistic science that deals with the study of sounds in their physical realization, their different characteristics and particularities.
The articulation of sound
The sound produced by the human voice is an articulated sound, because the vibratory wave can be modified by the intervention of certain organs (the tongue, lips, etc.). Three types of organs are involved in the production of articulated sound: the organs of respiration, the organs of phonation, and the organs of articulation.
Classification of sounds
The sounds are classified according to five criteria: by the absence or presence of obstacles in the air outlet (vocalic and consonant), by the place of articulation (vowels: previous or palatal, central, posterior or velar, consonant: bilabial, labiodental, dental, interdental, alveolar, palatal, velar), by the mode of articulation (vocalic: open, medium, closed, consonant: occlusive, fricatives , affricates, liquids (lateral or vibrating)), by the action of the vocal cords (sound, deaf) and by the action of the soft palate (oral and nasal).
