On this photo, the man standing before the front door of Gamble Hall is Sidney David Gamble, a famous photographer. During 1920s, he came to China and took a lot of photos that illustrating Chinese culture and society. Gamble Hall was located on the campus of Hangchow University.Sidney David Gamble was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to David Berry and Mary Huggins Gamble; grandson of James Gamble, who, with William Procter, founded Procter & Gamble in 1837. He was one of good friends of Robert Ferris Fitch, the fourth president of Hangchow University.So, Sidney David Gamble helped Robert Ferris Fitch build the campus of Hangchow University. He persuaded his family to donate a big sum of money to build the Gamble Hall and Gamble Field on the campus.
