The Scenic Route--Shanghai Street Photography (Jing'an Park)

Full confession: I'm not a huge fan of street photography.

This is especially the case here in Shanghai, because at the end of the day when you are reviewing the exposures you have captured, you often discover that about 80% of them contain a similar theme: PEOPLE STARING AT THEIR DAMN PHONES. I realize that there are many great opportunities for street photography here in Shanghai, but I guess it doesn't motivate me to go out and take pictures as much as a beautiful landscape or fun trip would.

This is why, since moving to Shanghai, I haven't taken many "street" shots. The problem is, Shanghai is a mega-city of millions and millions, making it difficult to reach a natural area without spending a whole weekend getting to and from there (for some exceptions, see my Yangtze River Delta post: https://steemit.com/photography/@shutter-bug/the-scenic-route-a-day-on-the-yangtze-river-delta) So, in the spirit of learning and getting out to shoot more, I took my camera to some local parks and scenic streets to see what I could get.

To my surprise, I managed to capture a few exposures I liked that didn't even have a single cell phone in them!

Most of these images were captured around Jing'an Park in central Shanghai, just across the street from the Jing'an Temple metro station. The park contains man-made ponds, waterways, caves (that are filled with a colony of cats), and numerous sculptures. You could see people practicing Tai Chi, playing music, or just relaxing in the afternoon sun. Overall, it was a lovely day. Most of the images are in black and white.....mostly because I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to street photography and it seems like all the best artists do it in black and white, so hell why not?
