A Trip Around The City - Historic Buildings: The Bank Of Montreal

in photo •  7 years ago

My hometown, Winnipeg is scattered with beautiful architecture. Especially, in the downtown area.

Built in 1913 by the American firm of McKim, Mead and White in NYC, The Bank of Montreal is located in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. With ceilings made of gold leaf and a cost of 1.29 million dollars at the time of construction, this Roman styled structure is one of the most incredible architectural works of art in the city.

The monument that is erected in the front of the building was put there to honor the bank employees that were killed during the First World War.

The entrance foyer, staircase, colonnades and fireplaces within the building are all made of marble from the town of Botticino, Lombardy in Italy.

Other elements of this building include the ceiling embellished with gold leaf, three stained leaded glass windows, and a basement vault lined with marble, wood and brass finishes.

This building was dressed to impress and impress it does.
