tree tuesday — green is a soothing color

in photofeed •  7 years ago

Today it's raining. We are still in the throes of winter and this is usually the time when rain comes to melt most of the snow. I'm not tricked by this stunt, however. I know that more snow will cover the green grass and bushes.

For #treetuesday I'd like to honor green plants and trees.

In the first two photos there are nests in the trees. They are quite large and show the beginning of tent caterpillar infestation.

The caterpillars eat the foilage and leave the tree bare. Fortunately, they don't threaten the life of the trees. It's grossly disturbing, though, to walk under a tree that has thousands of 2 inch caterpillars crawling and seeing the large silken shelters or webs they make for protection.

And here is something to cleanse your eyes from that sight! Thankfully, this area wasn't infested.

It can be hard to find lovely green this time of year. Nice to look back and dream of the warmer days. And I agree, the seething tree of caterpillars does kind of dig up some sort of 'yeeg' feeling from somewhere very deep and long ago when you first see it. Maybe a fight or flight kind of thing. Or just plain wiggidy causing... from too many scary movies? Who knows. But it is for real.

"Yeeg"....that's a great word. I'm going to steal that one!! It was creepy being near those things. The nests are interesting but I still felt "yeeg" walking under them.

It does have a certain sort of something to it, doesn't it? Especially with creeping crawling things. Just make sure to yell, "dds word" whenever you use it. Particularly when in public. OK, maybe not ( : Have a nice night.

They look like part of some SF movie scene..so large, never seen anything like that ever @countrygirl..

Ya...they are pretty gross. They're about 2 inches long....blech. I've never seen then turn into their butterfly stage though. I should look that up.

Ewww! Those things actually kill the trees in the upper peninsula of Michigan. My uncle used to take a torch to their nests to try and save the trees, which is also really kind of gross. They are fascinating to watch, though!

Nice photos—lots of writhing and wiggling!

I know...I know. Gross. They kill the trees in Michigan? I wonder if they are the same kind? or my info is incorrect. I mentioned to someone else about a horrible infestation north of here a few years ago. The roads were covered and it was slick.....eeeeewwwwww!

Ewwwwww... That sounds dreadful!

That reminds me of the story my parents told me of when they got caught in a frog migration. There were millions crossing the road, and they couldn't spend the night there... splat-splat-splat! Eww. Poor frogs!

Disgusting!!! ick.

It reminds me of Lorca's poem - Green, green, how much I want you green!

Who is Lorca? And why does he write poems about green things? lol

Those tent caterpillars certainly are unsightly and we have areas in NJ that get infested with them. If I had to guess, I'd say those might be locust trees. Nice post!!!

I think you're right @cognoscere re the locust trees. I think so too. They have a tendency to attract aphids so maybe that's why the caterpillars are there too.....leaves and aphids for dinner :)

That's crazy, never seen so many caterpillars in one spot!

You are really missing out!!!! lol

The pictures are beautiful but I shuddered at seeing all those caterpillars, that looks very impressive. It is not raining here this week. It is cold, but with blue sky and sun, so we enjoy the weather very much.

I know!! They are so gross. I brushed myself off after walking under the tree....blech! Glad to hear you have some sun and blue sky.

Wow...looks really great to share..thanks for your entry @countrygirl

Thank you @mcsamm.

I know, Michigan always teases us with a dozen or so false starts to Spring.

You know what's worse than a false spring? A tropical humid summer!!!

I love color gree. It is very refreshing. I love the photos.

Thank you!

Ah, green! But those nasty caterpillars. It has been raining since yesterday. The ground is frozen so there is no where for the water to go, and many streams are flooding. Several roads are closed for high water. It may change to snow tonight. It's rather a mess!

Not too far from us there was a flood...thankfully we are on high ground. The Grand River flooded all over Hamilton and Brantford. (If you know where they are :)

I hope the freeze kills all the nasties.....but we need some of them for something .... still have to figure out what 🧐

I've been to both Hamilton and Brantford...Oh Brantford was many many moons ago. There was this guy.....I was 21..but, enough of that!! 😃 I can see the river from my window and it is really high, but I am high enough that I don't worry. My neighbor, lives in an older cottage, She has had to sandbag during past flooding. More rain expected here this weekend.

Oh geez......I hope it doesn't go higher for you.

Stories...from younger days eh....lol. Brantford. Hamilton. Maybe we crossed paths? I was raised in Hamilton.

No...it was one wild weekend with a boy I had gone to school with in the states. He had moved up there for a job, and invited me up to try to keep the romance going, a good time, but it died a natural death because of the distance.

And I'm not worried about water..it would have to be a flood of biblical proportions before it would effect me.

Another great picture from @countrygirl. Are we expecting the "tent" to expand across more trees? Upvoted.

regards
SP

I hope not!!! These supposedly don't hurt the trees....it certainly looks like it does. But....ick. I've seen some pretty bad infestations over the years especially out in the country. Thanks for stopping bye @bit-sp.

signs of life has prevailed all over the world .. How nice. I like cribs.
I love the nests of ants too. Have excellent pictures. again wonderful colors and clarity. congratulations dear friend

Thank you @artizm. Appreciate you!

Really great pictures and I like the details and information about these cute killer!! caterpillars :) congrats and have nice day my friend... :)

Thanks again for your support and comments @mnallica.

It’s raining all over here too. Except we don’t have as green trees as that now :(

Oh , sorry if I gave you the idea these are recent photos - no no....these are from last year. I just needed to see more green than just on the lawn. It's so dreary right now. lol

and now..... hehehee i'm itchy all over!

i used to love letting caterpillars crawl all over me! until one day, a boy threw one at me. We thought he missed.
about 10 minutes later, I felt something crawling on my neck.

I'm not scared of them... but... shiver shiver shiver LOL

i'm not sure if i'm happy that you shared these photos with me hehehehehe

I know, me too. They are so gross. One time we were in Midland Ontario and they had such a bad infestation. The caterpillars were all over the roads like this and people were skidding their cars on them.

I hate creepy crawly feelings.....and I can imagine how you felt thinking one was on you. I could tell you so many stories about me and bugs....maybe I should write a post. Maybe :)

i want to read the post..... and i don't want to read the post hahahahahaha

skidding over caterpillars.

Spiders.....check
Earwigs.....check check

Who am I to disgree?
I travel the world and the seven seas

Cuz me be a pirate!!!!! Lololol

I'm not afraid of snakes but I wasn't terrorized by them!!! Ugh I can't imagine

Omg, that's quite disturbing. I really don't like those little crawlers... However, I must say that you make really nice photos.

Here we have a winter as it should have been in December. Snowing all week and temperatures around Zero.

They are ugly little creepy crawlers aren't they. hehe....We don't have snow anymore. All gone. We had a mild bit and a lot of rain. I do think we'll get more snow though, we always do.

Check out in the post from today a photo from last week. And after that, there was still snowing and covered the yellow flowers on the corner of the photo. Now we really feel like we are there in Canada with you.😉
