San Francisco from Above

DJI Mavic Pro, 26mm, 1/25sec, f/2.2, ISO 161 [3992x2992]
I tested out my DJI Mavic drone in downtown San Francisco this morning to see how it would do. It went great, the range difference between this and my Phantom 3 is night and day. With the Phantom these photos would not have been possible. There is so much radio interference downtown that the Phantom was pretty much limited to flying straight up a few hundred feet and snapping a couple shots then landing. As soon as I went higher or tried to fly away from where I was it would loose signal from the interference. With the Mavic I was flying well over 4k feet away without any signal issues. I ended up having to turn back due to battery considerations. If this drone can stay in range when flying around a downtown urban environment then its going to be hard to fly out range with it anywhere.
I regret shooting in automatic mode this morning as I believe the above image is a bit out of focus due to the 1/25th shutter speed it decided to use while hovering in gusty winds. I was having decent luck with it choosing good settings at first and it can be tedious having to constantly adjust camera settings while flying around, but this was a good example of why it pays to get in the habit of manually adjusting for every shot you take.

First nice pictures! wish I could get those already:D Still flying in beginners mode... scared what the mavic does in gusty winds, but as I can read in your story it's doing fine?
What are the laws in your area wth flying a drone in crowded places like a city?

Dont be afraid to fly a DJI out of range unless you turned off the auto return home on signal lose feature. By default however the drone will reset its home location on every take off, and if it looses signal to the controller it will auto pilot back to the take off point. It does surprisingly well in wind, I have flown it over the gusty Pacific Ocean without any sort of issues other then the wind preventing it from staying still. It gets pushed around a bit but it will overcome and fly where you need it to go. Im not 100% versed in the local laws. I know I cant fly near the airport or stadiums amd I have to always be a certain distance from people when I take off and land. Also local law enforcement can only put restrictions up to 100ish feet in the air and then its the FAA so the same across the entrie USA. What this means is they can tell you where to take off and land and can restrict you from flying low or near things, but in the big empty sky above the jurisdiction goes to the feds.

Thanks for the reply! So I can/need to have more faith in the capabilities of the mavic!?:D how do you take notice that there are no people around while taking off in the city?

You just look around! lol, don't think too much about it. Most people in big cities mind their own business and law enforcement in a place like SF could care less about someone with a small drone. They just see it as someone messing around with a toy. Every now and then you might run into an uptight citizen who knows every last law/rule and will inform you and/or report you at which point the authorities will pretend to give a crap just to appease the concerned citizen. But they really don't care and will just tell you to wrap it up and move along. Cops in other jurisdictions might be different, but this is how it is in San Francisco.
