A shot of Ad Deir or "The Monastery”, carved out of rock in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra. Architecturally an example of the Nabatean Classical style it was carved into the side of the mountain in the 3rd Century BC. At 50m (164ft) wide and 45m (148ft) high it is one of the largest structures in Petra with the main door itself being 8m (26ft) high. Petra, known to the ancient Nabataeans as Raqmu, lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah. Jordan. This is an old scanned negative from my archives that was taken back in early 2001.

I am always fascinated and amazed at how stonemasons were able to carve such enormous facades so meticulously out of quarried stone, let alone actual mountains. Were you able to go inside the monastery and explore?

Yes you can go inside but its just one big chamber; everything from the inside has long since been removed.

Which is sad, of course. Is the chamber like a "great room", or the basilica of a church? How many people do you think would fit in there?

It a big empty room. You could fit a lot of people in there. I think it was historically a tomb.

Interesting. There are many mysteries and a serious prophecy about Petra; I wish I could have gone when I was over in Israel visiting.

Loved this place. The walk up was beautiful too, or did you get the mule?

We walked up. Would love to go back. It was a long time ago.
