Scenery Cove Aurora

It is rare to find such stillness. No wind, no waves, no sound. So still I could set my tripod up on the deck of S/V BOB while at anchor and take a long exposure of the sky with no visible star movement. The silence out here can be deafening at times (at least once my kids are finally asleep!). Amazingly the G3 (KP7) solar storm was bright enough to cut though the endless blue twilight one experiences during the few fleeting hours of semi darkness that you have when you’re up in Alaska in the Summer. Happiness has always seemed a subjective state of mind to me, somewhat along the lines of Lucius Annaeus Seneca's words from two millennia ago that “a man’s as miserable as he thinks he is.” I do love mountains, sailing, and auroras and was super chuffed to have combined them all in one shot. Scenery Cove, South East Alaska, USA.

Wow! How incredible it must have been to experience such stillness in order to capture shots like this! Such a beautiful photo, thanks for sharing!

Thanks. Yes it such a serene part of the world in South East Alaska.

Beautiful photo. It sure must have been calm to get that from the deck. What design is your boat?

We were sailing on a 50' Catalina that we had chartered (with a couple to crew). I have been looking at boats for years but yet to buy one ;-)

Gorgeous shot mate!! Alaska looks like the promised land for aurora

That's insane!!! Sure you weren't run aground? ;)

In a fjord that’s a few hundred meters deep that actually quite hard to do!

You have have run up on a sleeping fjord monster.

Underwater Jedi Ewok base ...

Oh no, you're on to us!

beautiful ! Can't get enough of Northern lights.

Thanks !

Peter Pan!!!!! Great shot! It's does transmit the stillness you describe. So lucky to have been able to combine so many beautiful items together in such a perfect way.

Thank you! Very kind and I am glad it conveys the feeling of stillness.

What a beautiful photograph. How did you end up in Alaska from Australia? (maybe it's a post for another day ;-))

I am living in Northern British Columbia at the moment so Alaska is (relatively) close!

I dream of Northern lights. Even wrote a song about them, hope to watch them one day with my eyes

Thanks. I hope you get to see them also. Its a magical experience the first time you see them.

This photo reminds me of a story my husband used to tell our kids about Captain Highliner. The adventures they'd have on his sail boat and the colored skies. So pretty.

I can imagine how quiet that night must have been. I'd find it hard to breath in that silence...too beautiful to move.

Nicely done!

Thanks. It was a special night.

Beautiful!

Thanks

Beautiful aurora in Alaska :-) once I saw on Iceland and it was gorgeous ...

That is such a peaceful photo! nice shot of the aurora borealis. I have yet to capture one. Every time I see it i'm in the city or on my way back from work and don't have my camera. Lucky that your boat was still enough to take the shot and the silhouette of the boat just adds drama to the picture.

Thanks. Its such a beautiful phenomena.
