The Dreams of Youth

"I've always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can't afford it." What these men can't afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of "security." And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine - and before we know it our lives are gone.

What does a man need - really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in - and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all - in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade.

The years thunder by, The dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed.

Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life?

― Sterling Hayden, 1963

I wonder what Sterling would think of all the preposterous gadgetry we have today ! Written down in his book Wanderer some 55 years ago; his quote seems more relevant now than ever.

My son takes in the view at Bow Lake in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Just 30 minutes down the road crowds of people are fighting each other with their selfie sticks for a spot on the shores of Lake Louise.

Never stop trying to view life though the eyes of a child.

very heart-wrenching and this soul when reading your post, the span of time is so far but life is like a wheel that keeps spinning. So is the earth that is in rotation rotation in its axis. May our lives be useful and make life inj is not false. My greetings to you @intrepidphotos

Thanks. May our lives be useful. I like that.

Wow what a crazy photo! I just love it!

Thanks ! Glad you like it. I was trying to do something a little different with it.

Going OFF the beaten track is the most rewarding thing! To create your own stories, your own unique experiences... I mean, we both probably know how to fool the viewers of our photographs and make it look like we're alone even in the most touristy places. But here you and your son probably actually were the only two people around.

Gorgeous shot, it's like he's walking in an eye.

So true. We were there alone. Its an incredibly beautiful and peaceful place. I don't like crowded places as you can probably tell by my posts !

bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life

I'd rather be left with no money than nothing to show for all the money I have left

For sure. Sadly your in the minority I think.

This really puts things into perspective. Too many people flock to the spots where they are supposed to take pictures and never think to take the less traveled route. I had a photography instructor that was in a museum in Italy taking pictures. He said so many people were waiting in lines forever to get a look at the "famous" paintings and sculptures, but walking by the other works of art in the museum. So many people like certain things because others do and don't take the time to look for beauty elsewhere.

Yes so true. Its like selective myopia! People walk past the diamonds in the sand to see the one sitting in the display cabinet. Its the same with celebrity culture and why their endorsements are worth so much. Fame rather than talent seems to drive the enthusiasm of followers. Which leads to the destructive "fake it until you make it" mentality .

it's okay. right now i don't have a lot of content to post. It's bad time for photography right after winter everything feels washed out. Gonna get back to it very soon :)

Yes its an ugly time in the snow melt until things shoot again.

yeah waiting for better mood :)

steem price not helping also !

This picture makes me think the saying "a penny (or should I say steem dollar) for your thoughts!" It would be so cool to know what is going on in such a small kiddo's mind while taking a look at that breathtakingly beautiful view.

Ha. I can ask him but he might not remember ;-)

Maybe he does, you never know. But I might not have that steem dollar (my wallet doesn't look too promising) 🤔

Wow. Stunning photo! Thank you for the reminder to slow down a bit. We live in a beautiful World.

Thanks. We all need to remind ourselves that from time to time. To step away from routine (and the computer) and enjoy what is around us.

Awesome photo to go with an awesome quote. Glad to see you back, thanks for posting.

Two men, hitting 70. Dad has no regrets, having done most of what he wants to do. He is in hospital getting chemo for a random cancer that might well kill him. He is circumspect, happy, positive. Says he has lived a good life. Still, he has the enthusiasm of a child for the beauty nd wonder of the world, all its possibility. The other is my best friends husband. He too, a surfer. Facing crippling back issues, he feels that his life is over, and has nothing but regret for the life he did not live, all those roads he failed to travel. His child eyes have sadly long closed...

Thanks for sharing the story. I think its repeated over and over again all around the world.

Indeed. Glad you are living xx
