In Search for the Inconspicuous ~ Macro Art

in photofeed •  7 years ago

When you have been challenged to take pictures on a specific theme, and you cannot deliver what you initially intended, you've got to get out of the box. Way out of it.

@agniese challenged me last week to do a series of photos on Beauty of Maturity. My first and obvious idea was to take pictures of elderly couples holding each other's hands, but after spending several hours roaming the streets on Sunday, I had only one such photo taken at a shitty-looking parking lot. Not good, considering that the deadline was nearing and I hadn't thought of a plan B. I passed by the nearest Starbucks for a cup of decaf Americano, and I started walking back home.

An hour later, I was struck by the brilliant idea to photograph my old leather boots. You may wonder what maturity has to do with boots and leather. Well, the latter supposedly gets better with age (I've read so somewhere, sometime ago), so there's an indirect link there.

I decided to take all shots with my relatively new Lensbaby velvet 56mm f/1.6 lens, which has some great macro capabilities. Plus, manual focus makes me slow down, think about the shot, and immerse myself in what I am doing. I didn't want to have any of the glowing effects that the Lensbaby creates at wide apertures, so I stopped the lens down to f/8. My Lumix G80 was mounted on a tripod during the whole time, and I also used my Yongnuo LED wand to lit the subjects and create some cool shadows.

Bonus photo. No, my boots don't smell like cheese.

Why did I spend a whole day trying to photograph the obvious when I should have approached the challenge from another angle right from the beginning?

Thank you for stopping by!
Dan

Oh well... I knew that you will not disappoint me and dwell on the subject. This is definitely thinking out of box approach. I'm not surprised but satisfied :)
PS the cheese looks a bit like an old pizza that you forgot in your fridge for weeks. I hope you're not cheating!
PPS I have nothing against cheese, I love cheese. Especially blue cheese.

Hey, I'm happy that you liked the pictures, and I'd like to thank you for challenging me! 🙏 This totally dragged me out of my comfort zone :)

Haha, an old Quattro Formaggio? I am not cheating - the only old things that I keep in my fridge are jars with pickles, peppers, etc.

Do you like those smelly french cheeses?

You're most welcome :-) I'm waiting for your revenge ;)

To be perfectly honest with you... I'm a cheese perv. I love cheese, the older the better.
Fragrant, supple cheese. The goat cheese, cow's milk cheese, sheep milk cheese, smear-ripened, blue cheese, stretched curd, fresh, whey cheeses... Sweet mother of Jesus, drooling!

Hahah 😁 smear-ripened, stretched curd?! I didn't even know these exist, lol.

I just googled Stretched curd, that'd be mozarella, right?

That's right! You can also call mozarella - pasta filata :)

I am starting to get the feeling that you are like a cheese encyclopedia :P

Not only cheese ;)

Excellent shots!

No idea why but I like this kind of photographic studies. When it comes to shoes, a quote from Bukowski's poem The Shoelace ( I know, not everyone's cup of tea) always springs to mind

"..it's not the large things that
send a man to the
madhouse. death he's ready for, or
murder, incest, robbery, fire, flood...
no, it's the continuing series of small tragedies
that send a man to the
madhouse
...

not the death of his love
but a shoelace that snaps
with no time left
.."

Thanks for this post,
this chain of thoughts helps me go and clean the snow off the car, haha
(I hope there'll be no snapping today)

regards,
Esa

Haha, to be completely honest with you, I've never read anything from Bukowski :) That poem is cool, though! Was there any snapping? :)

Thanks a lot, Esa! 🙇
Where are you from in Finland?

Bukowski isn't everybody's cup of tea but that's just life. At the moment I live in Pirkanmaa area, around Tampere.

As for snapping, I've worn chelsea style work boots for ages. Nowadays I'm back to laced winter and hiking boots but I do have plenty of spare threads, if you see what I'm saying, haha

The city of Tampere became quite famous in Bulgaria after the local football team eliminated our Levski about 10 years ago :)

That's a really clever twist on the topic, so I'm glad you didn't find the elderly couple you were initially looking for ;) I also like how you riffed on the shoe images composition with the cheese one. Actually made me kind of hungry! :)

Haha, right? Now thinking about it, I would have ended up with a bunch of cliché photos :) It's absolutely great to know that I've managed to make someone hungry with my photo 😁 Thanks, Dave!

The thing you proved with these photos is that you matured as photographer! Beautiful macro shots, who doesnt have pair of old shoes, but not everyone see them as photographer! Love it.

Thank you so much for the kind words, dear! 😊🙇 With enough practice, I believe that eveyrone can learn to see and approach things from different perspectives.

Well aren't you fancy?? This is too creative. And I like that you explained the process as usual.

I didn't like the cheese however :)

And.....I didn't notice a reflection of any kind....oh wait....that was so last week:)

Well aren't you fancy??

I am! 😂

Are you not a cheese person? I'll be back with more reflections next week :P

Thanks a lot for your comment, Deb!

I don't mind cheese - I just don't like stinky cheese and that looks like stinky cheese. It has green "stuff" in it....and well, that's stinky 💩!!! eeeeeeeee 🤣

Hahah, I remember the day my friend from France stocked the fridge in our shared kitchen with some very expensive blue cheese. My god, the whole kitchen stank like 💩
The one in the photo is moderately stinky :P

Ha, ha, ha. Great idea. I particularly like the bottom two shots. Very crisp and clear.

How mature exactly are your boots?

Haha, the boots from the picture that you liked have been through 5 winters :)

Like most things in life you have to fail before you succeed.

Thanks for mentioning the wand! I have been wondering what it was since I seen it in your last video. It looks like it would be so handy.

I actually had a dedicated wand-post several months ago, if you are interested in reading more about it :) https://steemit.com/photography/@irreverent-dan/owning-a-lightsaber-yongnuo-led-wand-review-kind-of But in a nutshell, it's a great light and well worth the money :)

Thaks for your comment @smawkward :)

Not sure how, but I guess I overlooked your reply. Thanks for the info on the light saber. I am going to have to get one these. Had you not said something about the batteries I am sure I would have over looked that.

Now they have it on amazon with the battery and charger for $10 more than without it.

You are very welcome :) Let me know if you get yourself one of these.

LOVE those shadows man. great colors in the boots

Thanks a lot, Chrissy! I think it's the shadow that makes the cheese shot interesting :)

Nice. Interesting subject matter, for sure! The first shot looks like it could be an advertisement for the shoe company, or maybe the shoelace one! Ok, maybe not the lace one. They're fraying a bit. Fun photos, though.

Haha, not for the shoelace supplier for sure because these got frayed in less than a year :D Thank you, Mark!

The shots with the boots I can definitely see them in a Timberland commercial for their last collection line-up!

Haha! I also imagined the cheesy slogan: made to last 😂 Sadly, none of them are Timberlands.

Hi @irreverent-dan
Great idea, I think you can continue to develop it!
I'm glad that you got out of the box and explained it perfectly!

Hi Митя and thank you! I will definitely continue to develop it. I also have another idea for macro series - the geometry of food or something like that. We'll see :)

ha ha ha))
I will be glad to see;)

haha :)
I also prefer these excellent boots :)
you see the details very beautiful. and your narration is so much fun :)
I love cheese analogy.
very successful friend, congratulations

Thank you kindly, Ceren :) I'm glad that you liked the photos and had fun reading the post.

Lol!! Love this...especially the cheese!

Haha, I've got to eat that cheese, it's been sitting in the fridge since Sunday 😁 Glad that you liked it, Melinda :)

That means it'll be stinky x100!!

😂

Those are some incredible photos. The images are crisp. I like the way you colour graded them with a bit of purplish blue touch. Have a good one :)

Thank you @ashrayn, glad that you liked them. I like to color grade my images :) You too!

Love this. Makes me want to get my macro lens out.

Thank you, Robert :) What kind of macro photography are you into? :)

I am not really into macro photography ; so that’s why I am looking for inspiration !

I hope I have given you some inspiration then :) Cheers!

;-)

That is really the real macro art i adore it to much i feel like im in love with these details.

Thank you for the kind words, Soufiane, glad that you liked it ;)
