Syria Before The War #1 - A Culture Rich in its History

in photofeed •  7 years ago

I've been very lucky to visit Syria before the war and terror started. I wanted to share a series of photos taken in Syria before the war to remind myself and everyone of a time when this country lived in peace and showcased its incredibly rich culture. Syria has been known as the ancient pearl and perhaps marks the beginning of civilization. Today part one.

All photography is original and mine. Note that the photos below were taken with one of my older cameras (ugh, before 2011) and are therefore of lower quality.

The Citadel Of Aleppo

The citadel of Aleppo is believed to be one of the oldest and largest medieval palaces in the world. It has been occupied by the Byzantines, Greeks, Ayyubids and Mamluks. It became a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986. Unfortunately, the shelling and bombing of the Syrian war severely damaged the structure.

Ancient Ruins of Palmyra, Homs

Named one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world, these ancient ruins are located in the Syrian desert. During the Syrian Civil War, Palmyra came under the control of the Islamic State. In March 2017, the Syrian Army (with help of Russia) retook the city. Unfortunately, again, many artifacts and buildings had been destroyed by the Islamic State. A true wonder has to be rebuild...

Roman Theatre at Bosra

One of the largest Roman structures to still exist, this large theatre (seating for c. 15,000 people) has been constructed with black basalt. It is one of the best preserved structure both in Syria and across the Roman empire. Substantial restoration took place between 1950 and 1970, which have further helped to protect the interior. Absolutely breathtaking structure. I heard it has been damaged by the war as well. Typing all of this makes me really sad.

War is always terrible.
It is unfortunate that people in the 21st century continue to engage in such stupid things.

"When the rich wage war, it's the poor who die", no risk and profitable business for rich, so as long as man kind exist, unfortunately there will be war.

Beautiful pictures taken, what has ancient buildings to do with war? What is the purpose to destruct them?

Thank you! Indeed it is very sad. Hopefully one day a significant part of what has been destroyed can be restored in its old glory.

Thank you for sharing. Really interting post! You were very lucky to visit these places!
Resteemed!

Buen Post.

Please continue these kind of posts, truly beatiful, altough heartbraking. Thank you for posting. Resteemed and upvoted!

Hey there. I have a client who is doing an influencer marketing campaign on Steemit in the photography niche. If you're interested, I'd like to introduce you guys. Get in touch with me here or on Discord if you want. yallapapi#1970

For some reason I have a strange attachment to Palmyra, even when I'm a Latin American guy. I feel the damage done to Palmyra is impossible to recover by complete, but I still have hope that something can be done to restore at least most part of it.

I like the ancient architecture. I really want to write the architecture of European countries but it seems that I live in Vietnam so feel not very real.

Have a chance to remember my visit Vietnam. there are many historical sites (y)

Syria really is one of the oldest regions in matter of civilization. They had a deep history and bonds as the Syrian people. Thats why they were dragged to war, the government wouldn't unite the people and look at them as Syrians, contrarily, they promoted their own ethnicity. Rebels were against this ethnic discrimination at the first time, there wasn't a war as big as the war that is going on currently. The big war, the murder of civil people, bombed hospitals, started when the USA and Russia started to "play" with this region in the name of human rights.

Thank you for sharing this. It's hard to know in a travel moment what will are most meaningful or memorable later on. Glad that you were there and photographed what we might not be able to see for a long time.

Since i guess 7 years this brutal war is already taken place, and millions of peoples lifes are destroyed by money hungry sharks and bullies. I dont find the right words for those mad people, because they dont exist. Your photos are a beautiful reminder of what was before the war. I hope for the people of Syria, that better times will come back to them. I have a few syrian friends aswell, and it makes me very sad to hear how everything falls apart. Syria is in my heart and i thank you for sharing those pictures. Inshallah

This is awesome, I've actually thought about making a similar post myself because I was also so fortunate to visit Syria before the war. This is a great tribute. Such an amazing and photogenic place! The trip made a very strong impact on me, and thinking about all this amazing places and peoples being destroyed is so sad! Thanks for sharing these images!
