Beacons

It may be boring. It may be pedestrian and mundane. But I’m fascinated with lights.

I love the darkness. But I crave the lights that provide contrast and hope and endless metaphor. Lights that serve as beacons. I simply cannot get enough of them.

I love light and darkness metaphors....surprise!

I'm attracted to softer photos so I like your third one the most. It gives me the idea of two time periods.

This is one of my favorite photos. I took it a while ago and it was one of those happy accidents. The light is squeezing out against the night.

Wow, Deb...what a fantastic image! I want to go to there...wherever it is...and just live in that moment. I’d say it’s a magic accident.

Aren't those bubble orbs interesting? I see life in bubbles. I should write about it. So many things to do, so little time :) Glad you like the photo Lisa. Thank you.

I agree with Lisa that is a fantastic photo. Like the color on the rain.

You know what? It's snow!!!

Now you’re reminding me of Yayoi Kusama, one of my favorite contemporary artists.

I just looked her up.....that's EXACTLY how I see in my head.....funny.

That’s scary and wonderful all at the same time. She’s a fascinating character. You can find documentaries about her on YouTube.

Gee....I'll have to watch it...now I'm nervous.....eeeeeee

No wonder you said that was scary. I just read some of her quotes and thought...hmmmmm....these thoughts are very familiar, I wonder if she has bipolar disorder (or schizo affective disorder) And yes, she does, plus a plethora of other things.

I don't have this disorder or hallucinations but I have close ties with it. That's why it's familiar.

When I saw a photo of her I was reminded of Miss Snow from SNL skits. lol....best skits ever.

I’ve ne er seen Miss Snow 🙀

She’s got many issues but she’s managed to channel it all not the most amazing art. And to share it with the world. I mean we’re all struggling through this life, right? Yet eh hasn’t let that stop her from doing the work she was meant to do.

BTW, the image you like was taken in a waiting room. I was compelled to edit it to reflect how I felt in there.

Very interesting....maybe a story about it?

Hmmmm... May. Be.

Ooh, I've seen this one! ;)

Yes, yes you have :)

Hey Lisa, I totally share your fascination with lights! Is that a spider web in your last shot? I love it!

Here's one from me:

Nice one! Does it actually work? Such decay makes me giddy. I’m a little odd. 🤪

Yes, that’s a spider web. Good eye. Thanks for playing my reindeer game!

I don't know but it looks like the bulb is new. This is one of the old tobacco warehouses in my hometown. I must go there one day and take more pictures because they have plans to renovate them. My pleasure! :)

You totally need to explore before it’s all gone.

This is so artsy. That light kind of scares me ... .not sure why.

I think the starkness and instability are definitely jarring. Are there monkeys in your hometown? I could see a rogue gang of monkeys hanging from the light and tagging the wall.

Probably hangers on from the Oz generation.

The starkness is jarring - that's a great word to describe it.

Maybe because it looks like it's about to fall down from the wall?

That too! But it reminds me of something in nightmares.

I didn't even see webs.

That is one crooked light pole. Looks like who ever tagged the wall hung on the pole to do it.

Haha 😁 I love your dark humor.

Your fascination here with lights reminds me of a time long ago when I was sitting outside in the city at night and as I looked up and saw what I saw, I had to take a photo. So I went digging and found the photo. Excuse the quality because it was long ago and the phone cameras back then are not as good as they are today.

DSC00101.JPG

It is not an electrical light as such, but they emit light. Flames from a heater above and the full moon trying its best to shine through the winter night sky

This is a very compelling image. And the quality is “vintage”. That sounds snarky but I’m quite serious. I’m part of the global mobile photography community (yes, that’s a real thing) and many of us miss the early days of grit and low fidelity. It truly had a charm that just doesn’t exist anymore.

Agree, I had given this phone I used to take a lot of nice photos with to my sister long ago and I had asked her in the past if she still had it because I wanted to use it to take more photos. But she said the phone didn't work anymore. I tried to find the old photos but could only find a few. There was one particular one I really hoped to find but couldn't.

Nothing hurts quite like losing photos 😩

Hello @outrayjust! I like your blogging style especially your use of light-darkness metaphor. It made me think a bit more than what I see and I read from your post.

Now, I'm a photography enthusiast, so I see light in an objective way. A bit more about my need of light for my subject to stand-out. What I mean exactly could be described through my photo below:

Im glad to have read your blog and discover your feed. Looking forward to your upcoming posts :-)

The professional photographer in me agrees with you. The poet will maintain the metaphors. Thank you for contributing! Nice to meet you. 😊

It's nice to meet you as well :-) keep in touch @outrayjust :-)

I bought this beauty in a charity shop for very little.

Very cool! is it an overhead or a tabletop?

Overhead

I love finding treasures at secondhand stores.

Making the mundane look so awesome. Love that photo with the shadows of the table and chair.

Thank you! Aren’t you gonna post a light, too? C’mon...ya know you want to 😉

Haha, this morning I had stopped on my way to work to photograph some birds, I had parked next to a Street lamp that was still on and thought of your post. The birds won and I went after them instead though.

But you got me, I have spent the last few minutes taking photos of a light in the office and my co-worker has been giving me a weird look.

You just made my day! Weirdo. 😉😂

I believe you have corrupted me. Keep looking at lights around the building thinking to myself "oh that's interesting".

Happy I could make your day :)

I believe this will be my first contest!

Would definitely be interesting to what is submitted.

👍🏻

I love these! How did you photograph them?

Thanks, They are normal 2'x4' florescent panels. It took a few tries to get my phone parallel and squared to the lights.

That's what drew the attention of my co-worker. Just used my phone and edited them with Snapseed. I have really begun to like Snapseed. That blur tool made the last images look like Qtips.

Snapseed is the best editing app. It truly mimics a darkroom once you get the hang of it.

Oh, that's how you blurred them! :) Snapseed is awesome

As always, brilliant. :)

Many thanks! I think you need to post a light, too. 😉

LOVE THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, my friend! Surely you have a light to contribute from your brilliant stash.
