ABOUT THE PHOTO

This is an raw export of a shot I took after hiking though the snow up to Artist point in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington State, USA. There are lots of features: Mount Baker dominates the skyline in the southwest, a lone camper drinks a cup of hot tea, the moon hangs in the sky to the left of frame, a frozen lake, and lots of silhouetted trees in the after glow of sunset. I have edited the shot up several times and just can't find anything that I am happy with so have never posted it up on social media before this. The foreground snow is weirdly textured and has footprints (I am a virgin snow snob now I live in Northern BC). The afterglow is uneven and concentrated to the right of frame. I always feel like I want to crop it in closer to the man drinking tea but then the moon and Mt Baker seem distracting at the edges of the frame. So I am looking for some editing inspiration otherwise it will simply languish at the back of my archives.

first of all i want to say that it took me 3 minutes with +3 exposure to find the tourist... all this photoshop work may be affecting my vision

while @jarvie wants to lift the Veil of darkness I decided to embrace it and use it to my advantage to create some atmosphere in the image and moved the moon, so the tourist can see it better.

Damn i just checked this from my phone and apparently steemit has compression issue as well as facebook :(

This is a great edit. You were just pipped to the post by @aweber however I am going to provide a consolation prize's of 0.5SBD!

thanks

I hadn't checked out any of the other submissions, but it looked like I agreed with them on cropping it to a little wider, haha. I kept going back and forth on whether I wanted to stress the foreground and brighten it up, but at the end I went for a compromise..a little more relaxing, and helps focus on the person. I love this shot, by the way. Super awesome.

RDownieIMG_8885.jpg

I love this edit. I am going to award it 1 SBD for 1st place as its represents the experience of how it felt to me when I took the shot.

Ah nice! Thanks Roberto! I think this was my favorite shot from the collection (don't tell the others), and I know it was my favorite edit.

Gratz home skillet. Well deserved.

thanks dude! I love grits and skillets!

My photostar submission.

I did provide my tips for each of the photostar pictures in a recent post if you all are interested in my take.

Unbelievable. The guy that taught me how to make a clickable link, isn't practicing his preachings! SHAME!

Dangit i forgot... shame.
Rt click open as new tab?

I'm too lazy!

Thanks. But I do prefer that the veil of darkness remains in this shot as the foreground is too busy IMO !

tA7vyW9_d.jpg

Thanks ! I like this but it looks like the compression ratio is too high so its a bit pixelated.

Such a fun image to tinker with. Thanks!

This is a great edit. You were just pipped to the post by @aweber however I am going to provide a consolation prize's of 0.5SBD!

Thanks! I'll let @aweber have this one since he was kind enough to teach me everything I know about steemit.

Here is my version. I first tried a 16:9 ratio, which looked good, but then settled for the original ratio to keep more foreground in ... difficult, with all those shadows - I lifted them just a bit. There is a bit of noise but I think it is perfectly acceptable. (I usually try to avoid noise reduction if possible)

RDownieIMG_8885.jpg

Thanks for the edit ! Its always interesting to see how people treat noise!

This is my edit for this shot. I think that this picture is HUGE (and I say this because it take me quite a bit to see that there was someone standing just in the middle of the picture!!). So i decided to crop the shot a bit to take some elements out and make it easier for the viewer to get all the rest (still a lot) of the capture.

Post with this shot and the edit for @snooway is here

Thanks !

I hope you don't mind but I cropped this a little.

Love it ; but where is the tradmark ISS transit?

You know what, I thought about it!

A few bats would have been cool as well.

So demanding!

Sorry. It looks great how it is without the bats. Peter Lik would be proud.

Well, Peter Lik would have gotten this in-camera, of course.

I am going to display it on full screen and then take a picture of your shot with my camera . That's in-camera right?

Congratulations : this is my 'photostar' pick !

Woohoo, thank you! :D

Here's my guest "photo star" submission. That was a challenging one but cool shot!

RDownieIMG_8885fix.jpg

Thanks. I like this but think the foreground is still to busy.

This is my take:
NN_20171027_8885_untitled_01-Edit-3.jpg
I found this a really tough one. Decided to go for a 16:9 ratio, and remove the moon. I think the moon draws too much attention because it is such a light object in this rather dark scene. And I decided to clean up the snow a little bit.
And I didn't pull the sliders too much; but that's just my taste 😊.

Thanks. Its interesting to see without the moon.

I didn't notice the guy in the photo until I cropped in.

Thanks!

I only found this at 5:45pm, worked as fast as I could. Hope it's not too late.

RDownieIMG_8885-Edit.jpg

Thanks!

That was the most difficult photo to edit this week for me. It is many things in the frame, so it really hard to focus on something. That is why I decided to remove some of the things )) Like the Moon, some boulders and plants on the snow, the bush in the foreground. Then I compressed some empty space with low information and cropped the image. The final touch: I flipped the tourist, so he looks at Mt. Baker instead of the missing Moon.

Thanks for the edit ! Appreciate the ideas.

I like this in B&W. Looks a bit more lunar.

Moon wasn't big enough so I dropped in a new one and went for a 2:1 crop.
robert-week4.jpg

Interesting ; although I think it stands out too much now like a composite as its too sharp.

Wow. Thanks for all the responses on this. I have 100% up-voted all the responses (for what thats worth !) . I love the darker versions that have been cropped into more of a pano format. I am going to split the prize as there was a few that I like. @aweber comes in at first place prize of 1 SBD as he edited the shot in a way which was closest to how the experience felt to me when I took the shot. Also I like the edits of @vmoldo and @kevinleedrum so they take consolation prize's of 0.5SBD each. Thanks again for everyone edits ! It has provided some inspiration for me to take another look at this shot. As for the the best 'photostar' edit; I have to go with the radical edit by @derekkind!
