On failure and unsatisfying Plan B's

My entry for the Self Portrait Assignment of Week 1 of the second season of the Photo Games

I had grand plans for the self portrait contest this week, but in the end I was crushed under the weight of my own expectations and was unable to bring my better ideas to life. I spent all of today trying to brainstorm a new idea, and did, but it was far, far better on paper than in photo form, so I went to Plan B: throw on some sunglasses and stand by a gridded soft box.

It's alright, but it's not me, and it's not creative, and I'm kicking myself for not coming up with something better. It's frustrating when you have promising concepts but can't find a way to turn them into reality.

Since practice makes perfect, you can tell I haven't practiced creative photography in many months, but I was happy to have a reason to do so this week - thanks to @jarvie and the Week 1 Photo Stars for hosting this great challenge! I enjoyed the break from routine and the excuse to work on a fun photo. Looking forward to the next creative challenge!

Good thing your plan B is still pretty awesome

Haha, well, thanks!

Looks great!

Thanks, Sara! :)

Straight from The Matrix. Very cool shadows!

Hehe, yes, I guess that grid pattern kinda sells the idea of the Matrix! Thanks!

Don't sell yourself short! This looks great! Assignments are always good for forcing you to do something new.

Well, thanks! :D

No cloak? Still love it though!

Nah, I didn't feel like wrapping myself in a blanket last night. :p

Did you take the red pill or the blue pill?

No, I said "I don't want to take any of your mysterious coloured pills!"

By the way I love how the grid was reflected on the glasses! And the shadows are awesome.

Thank you! Shadows are the best way of concealing a messy background... and hair. :D

Don't worry, whenever I see your shots I think it must be hard constantly living up to such a high standard

Hehe, thanks! I mean, I should be improving all the time, though, right? But I have a sunglass photo from 2012 that is probably still my best. It's frustrating that I can't better it!

Yeah, on monday we think 'I'll do it thursday', and on thursday we don't even know what day it is anymore because we're so stressed out by a growing list of tasks :')

Even though it's not 'you' it's a cool portrait, the stripes in your shirt plus the grid on your glasses makes it cool to me, a geometry fan :D

Thanks, @soyrosa! Yeah, I like geometry and symmetry in my images. :D

It not might feel like you ; but its a cool photo none the less. You do however look determined and cranky; so perhaps it is you on that day!

Hahaha, this is me when I wake up and discover I'm Agent Smith.

I think it's a cool shot! Now I'm wondering what you were planing to do??

Something exploring the ideas of personal struggle and individualism in an age of group identity. Something like that. ;)

Oh wow... that sounds intense and interesting... I'm sorry you couldn't get it happening! I love where you go with some of these themes, so creative but with great purpose!

Well, I'm trying to put more purpose into it these days, but with greater purpose comes greater difficulty... :)

Oh I like that!! I try to do that with just life in general... each day... it's so easy to slip back into old habits though. I look forward to seeing more from you then... this change. I already look up to you and have learnt so much. I have a long way to go but if you improve, we all improve! : )

Yes I agree about what you say about slipping back into old habits.

Gee, thanks! :) I hope I have time to create new stuff like this in the future! The future is looking like a busy place right now.

Better to be busy than not! Busy is good...
Yeah... we're always on a journey of self improvement : )

Well... we aren't always on that journey - and that's part of the problem with the world - but those who get on that train and don't stop at the next station might find one day that they've arrived!

Sounds familiar. ;) Wondering how your plan A looks like? I once put my portrait in the Aegean Sea (only me there) together with another beach photo totally packed with Chinese swimmers - that's a funny contrast. :D

Haha, yes, that's a good way of illustrating individualism! :D
