*Not my photo. These are from a photographer, Zhuo Ya, who does a lot of wedding photo.
The reason I want to share his work, is to show that there is no lens that is the best for portrait. While he also uses prime lenses, a lot of his work are actually done with zoom lenses (as in the photo posted), and at wide angle, the 2 things that most people don’t consider for portrait. Perhaps it is not very ideal for traditional portrait, but there is not just one type of portrait. Personally, I could choose his style over other traditional type of wedding style.
There is really no one best lens for all. A lens that is a must have for me may not suit you. You need to understand how your lenses work, and know what do you want achieve, then to pick out a lens that would work best for you, even at the moment for what you can afford. Learn your lens, make the best out of it, before you move onto the next one. That would even give you a better foundation in understanding lenses, and what they can do.
Anyone who tells you that you must have this lens, or that lens is junk, without a legit explanation, they just don’t know enough. Most of the seasoned professionals I have encountered never told me which piece of gear was trash. They actually listen to what you need first to make any advices.
