TONGGERET OR GARUNGPUNG

Tonggeret or garungpung

is the name for all kinds of insect members subordo Cicadomorpha, order Homoptera. These insects are known to many of its members who make a loud noise from the trees and last a long time.


This insect has a pair of facet eyes that are located far apart in the head and usually also has a transparent wing. The shape is sometimes like a large fly, although there are small cicadas. The cicadas live in temperate climates to the tropics and are highly recognizable among other insects, especially because of their large bodies and extraordinary acoustics generated from sound-producing devices under its wings.

Many cicadas have a season-influenced life cycle. In Indonesia, the sound of a loud cymbal pitcher will appear at the end of the rainy season, when the insect reaches adulthood, coming out from the subsurface to perform the mating season ritual. Adult groves are just getting out of the ground early in the rainy season. After the mating, the female puts the egg on the ground and the insect dies. Cicadaet is sometimes mistaken for grasshoppers or large flies, although they have no close family ties. Cicadaet has more taxonomically close relationship with wereng and aphid.

The cylinder has an amazing metamorphic phase, because for 17 years it lived in the larval phase, before finally in 3 days becoming an adult insect and immediately entering the reproduction phase. A few weeks after the marriage the cylinders will die.
