Photos of four downy woodpeckers which visited my home this week. This was on two occasions, both times the birds were in pair (two male adults the first time, a young male and a young female the second time). I used a Minolta 500mm f/8 mirror lens, an unique lens of which I talked about in my previous post.
I ran inside to go grab my camera when I noticed this one and his friend flying around a dead tree in my backyard. I didn't think I'd be lucky enough for them to be still there when I returned. The first one is a young female:
A millisecond before taking flight. His head is blurry from fast movement, even though this was shot at 1/1500 second!
The next one is male, with his characteristic red cap.
An adult displaying his golden wings.
A second one joined him for the feast (it was a rainy day, so the bugs inside the old post must have been active).
The camera is a Sony a77.

Great shots! They are such beautiful little birds! I haven't seen many downy woodpeckers the past few years, so it is particularly nice to see that you had some visit you!

Thanks! They are very common here in Canada, especially in winter as they have a reliable food-source. It was the first time I saw young ones however :)
