15 rolls in 15 days - Day 6 - Getting close (Street photography)

in photography •  7 years ago

Welcome back to day 6 of my photography project. If you have been following from the start, you know I have been shooting digital, but with certain limitations to make the experience remind of film photography. Here are the guidelines I keep in mind:

  • Max 36 photos per day
  • Post at least 10 photos each day
  • Turn off LCD screen so not to review images

In the first part of this series I wrote about the reasons behind this little personal project. Mainly, it's to slow down my photography process, think about every composition and to prepare myself for getting into film photography. I'll post my impressions and lessons learned at the end of it.

If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough.

When it comes to street photography this quote from Robert Capa is so true. Using a telephoto lens does not convey nearly as good the feeling of intimacy between the observer and the subject. Coming close to subjects can be really challenging and it's important that the photographer is respectful towards the people he is photographing.

As you can see from the photos below, I pushed myself to make extra steps closer. I would see someone interesting and anticipate some kind of gesture/reaction or a look before taking a photo. Sometimes it works, other times you get nothing. :)

Hope you enjoy the photos from day 6

See you tomorrow :)

The 2nd and 3rd one.....love !

But all in all these are all great. From the blonde on the phone looking like the mannequin in the window, the dog focused on something on the ground, the dancing girl and rock climbing guys to the dog walkers and group photos.

Day 6? How are you feeling about this challenge? Learning anything?

I'm glad I didn't put off camera in my bag for the second photo - I was taking a break and the sprinting girl appeared out of nowhere.

Well, today was day 8 and I feel like I have learned more in these 8 days than in the previous 8 months of serious shooting. :) Not that the photos are looking great all of the sudden, but I've learned a lot what works and what doesn't. Also I've expanded my comfort zone for taking street photos, which is obviously very important. :)

Hi! Nice challenge you have set up here for yourself. Might try something similar myself in the future and see where it gets me.
As a frenetic street photographer myself I always tend to leave some feedback under blog entries that capture my eye and try doing so without sounding too critical. So here goes that:
Regarding the quote from Capa, getting up close certainly helps getting captivating captures when shooting the streets. In particular so because it allows you to "step in the moment" as the photographer and to work extreme angles, offering a plethora of tools for interpretation of the scene. Nevertheless, it s my opinion that Capa meant as well that, as photographer in general, but certainly so when hitting the streets, it is of great importance to feel "close" to your subject. To show respect, empathy and thus fully understand the scene and your role as observer in it so you can ultimately redefine your role in the scene and take part n it. That being said, I do think you could get even closer (literally this time around) to your subjects in the future. While 2, 3, 4 and 12 are my personal favourites of your series, I feel like all of the images could do with some more "tension". The way they are presented here, the scenes often still shows just that: a scene captured from outside, as an observer would see them. But step in closer and I think you would agree that a world of possible compositions and stories to tell opens up for you to be part of.
Anyway, just my two cent worth. Will certainly follow you and see how this challenge further develops!! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the amazing feedback! I definitely agree with what you said - getting even closer can open up a world of possibilities for interpretation. Of course, not every photo has to be that way and I like to experiment with how much to show and what to leave for interpretation. That said, I have a long way to exercise my confidence with getting close and being OK with it and this challenge is partly about that.

It's a great feeling though when you "step in the moment" and become part of the scene and not just an observer.

What awesome street photos, I feel like these deserve an exhibition to themselves!

Wow that's a great compliment! I do have musings about that so I'm happy if I can get one photo per day worthy of showcasing. :)

No problem!

I'm always awed by your street photography, I like the way you approach your subjects. The second image, caught my attention, that's not an easy shot ~ good timing.

You also got the lighting right, may I know what time were you shooting these photographs? I'm guessing a period before sunset?

It's a hard task capturing a sprinter well - I tend to count their steps in my head and anticipate the perfect position. I was lucky with the girl above.

Yeah, these were shot between 4pm and 6:30pm (sunset) - the light is always more beautiful then. :)

If you're counting your subjects' steps, did you preset the focus to manual (mf)? Or is it on Auto focus?
I'm impressed by your great control of focus on this shot :-)

Great pics as always!

And there are a lot of chess boards in your city right?

It seems to me that every time I check your pics there is a chess board hhahaha

Thank you!

Hehe no, not a lot of chess boards, but we do have them in this popular spot so you probably saw few shots I made there. :) I
