Photography / Greek Numismatics pt10: Ancient Sports

in photography •  8 years ago  (edited)

Sport themes are very frequent in commemorative coins. However, most of the time, these coins are nothing special in terms of aesthetic appeal. Fortunately, once in a while, there is an exception to this rule.

Today I will be featuring two of these exceptions.

The first one is the design of the discobolus on the Athens 2004 commemorative 2 Euro coin - a very widely circulated coin. The figure of the discobolus is straight from an ancient statue that was known to capture the fine dynamics and harmony of athletic motion.

The second one, depicting a javelin thrower, was featured back in 1981, on the 250 Drachma silver coin (0.900). It was of limited mintage, to commemorate the pan-European games of 1982. There were probably over 8-10 coins in this series (gold and silver, 1981/1982), but this is the only one that stands out for me. These coins will typically sell starting from 20$+ and there are two editions (normal and proof with mirror finish). The one pictured is the normal one. I've alternated light setting (one photo in the shade, one in direct sunlight and slightly angled) to experiment with the reflectivity of the coin.

Photographic settings: Compact Sony DSC-WX220 / ISO 100 / EV -2.0 / Natural Light.

Great coin. Note I see <center> tags showing. Maybe the </center> tags are missing.

Yeah I'm having issues ever since the HTML editor was removed. I removed the tags entirely. For most, they should be autocentered and scaled down due to being oversized, but it won't be properly aligned if one has a very large high resolution monitor. Let's hope we get a center-tag edit button at some point.

You can enter HTML tags right in the Markdown editor. Sounds like a good solution. If you could use help, you are invited to join #Steemprentice.
