With the second SteemFest aproaching, you've probably already prepared or are preparing to travel to Lisbon. Maybe you're only interested in going to the SteemFest and leaving the next day, or maybe you don't care about the SteemFest and always wished to travel to Lisbon. Anyways, you should know that there's a lot of interesting things to do in the portuguese capital, and you can do all of them in a short time.
I made a list of stuff for you to do when you travel to Lisbon:
- Travel in the Tram 28 (Elétrico 28)
When you're traveling in Tram 28, you're traveling back in time. You'll go through hills and medieval streets. You'll pass by the main attractions of the city, all while using green energy. I recomend you to buy the Lisboa Card (it has a 24h duration, regardless of whether or not you abandon the tram), because you'll feel the urge to leave everytime you see something beautiful, and there are lots of amazing monuments, statues, etc.
You can start your ride in Martin Moniz Square, which will finish in Prazeres. Please, keep an eye on the pickpockets, as there are some.
- Walk thru Parque das Nações (Park of the Nations)
Between May 22nd and September 30th of 1998, Expo 98' was held in what's today called Parque das Nações, under the theme "Oceans, a patrimony for the future", and it was considered the world's best exhibition ever. Some of the buildings of the park are currently still being used for what they were designed, highlighting the Gare do Oriente, the Meo Arena (aka Pavilhão Atlântico) and the Oceanarium (the world's biggest (where you can see fishes from the 5 oceans).
- Watch a football/soccer game
A large amout of portuguese people loves football, LOVES. Lucky you that two of the best portuguese teams will play November 5th: Sporting CP (Sporting Lisbon) x Sporting de Braga (20:15), in José de Alvalade Stadium. Sporting CP is known for having one of the best torcidas in the world, and you don't want to miss it!
- Visit Torre de Belém (Belém Tower)
One of the seven wonders of Portugal, in this tower you'll be going back to the Age of Discovery. You'll be able to admire the Manuelino style present in the monument. It had a defensive objective.
- Go into Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery)
Also made during the Age of Discovery, it's classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It's a true symbol of the portuguese ostentation and wealth made possible after the discovery of lot's of gold in Brazil.
- Take a meal Fernando Pessoa
Considered the best portuguese poet (along with Luís de Camões), he's now a Lisbon tourist attraction. You can visit his statue in Café A Brasileira (The Brazilian Lady Cafe), where he used to spend time to reflect and write his fantastic poems. The cafe's interior is also really beautiful.
- Taste a Pastel de Belém (Pastels of Belém)
You should visit Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, as it has the secret recipe for the original Pastéis de Belém. They're delicious!
- Spend some part of your night in Bairro Alto
You will have lot's of fun in Bairro Alto. Even tho it's a beautiful narrow street, you'll see restaurants from every country in the world, lot's of bars to spend time drinking with your friends (and hopefully don't forget the moments), and look up to the beaufitul architecture of the buildings.
- Fall in love with Sintra
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, it may not be exactly in Lisbon, but it's really close. In Sintra, you'll watch beautiful medieval buildings, or, if you want something more current, you should spend an hour or two at the bars.
- Sunbathe in Cascais beaches
Althought it's not really in Lisbon, you should take a time to visit the beautiful and warm Cascais beaches. If you're lucky, the weather will be fine, and you will enjoy a great day laying on the beach. Just don't forget your sunscreen!
There's lot's of other stuff to do, but these are the one's who sound the must fun to me. Be free to make me more questions about the city. Have a great day!
