the mosque was founded by Habib Abdurrahman Bin Habib Husen Al Mahdali or the title of Habib Kuala Baku, he came from the Hadrul Maut of Yemen. His arrival in Aceh was estimated in 1826 AD, not much different from Habib Abu Bakar Balfagih or better known as Tengku Di Anjong who also built a mosque with the same architectural form in the village of Peulanggahan not far from the Mosque Baiturrahman Banda Aceh.
Even according to some literature I have ever read, this mosque formerly became one of the Islamic center. The habib did not want to be with his brother who preferred the coast as the center of da'wah, but he chose to go slightly from downtown Banda Aceh at that time.
Masjid ini didirikan oleh Habib Abdurrahman Bin Habib Husen Al Mahdali atau yang bergelar Habib Kuala Baku, beliau berasal dari Hadrul Maut negeri Yaman. Ketibaan beliau di Aceh diperkirakan pada tahun 1826 Masehi, tak jauh beda dengan Habib Abu Bakar Balfagih atau yang lebih dikenal dengan Tengku Di Anjong yang juga membangun masjid dengan bentuk arsitektur yang sama di desa Peulanggahan tak jauh dari Masjid Raya Baiturrahman Banda Aceh.
Bahkan menurut beberapa literature yang pernah saya baca, masjid ini dahulunya menjadi salah satu pusat pengajaran agama Islam. Sang habib tak ingin bersama dengan saudaranya yang lebih memilih pesisir pantai sebagai pusat dakwah, melainkan beliau memilih untuk sedikit ke dalam dari pusat kota Banda Aceh kala itu.
