Serbian Athens – Novi Sad

As mentioned in the previous text, we continue with sightseeing of the most beautiful cities in Serbia. Yesterday I returned from a visit to Novi Sad and I have to say that I'm still under the impression, given the last time I saw this city 14 years ago. This city is STUNNING! Novi Sad is located in the northern part of the Republic of Serbia, in the central part of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, in a beautiful plain area. For many years it has been a Serbian cultural center, today it is a major financial center of the Serbian economy. Novi Sad is the second largest city with about 350,000 inhabitants, however, it is the opposite of all major cities in Serbia.

You know great that history has left an indelible mark on each of today's cities, provinces, states, left a mark on culture, a way of life, and in architectural and cultural terms this city is completely different from all others. That's why today, besides the Serbian language, in Novi Sad Hungarian, Slovak and Russian languages are spoken, and they are in official use. On the main square there is the magnificent cathedral, or as they are incorrectly called, because the real cathedral is located in Subotica where the seat of the diocese. The Name of Mary Church is a Roman Catholic church and is one of the symbols of Novi Sad.

When you walk through the streets of Novi Sad you will have the impression that you are not actually in Serbia, the whole city was built in Hungarian and Turkish style, and perhaps this leaves an indelible mark on all tourists visiting this city. The inhabitants are incredibly kind, in the streets you can hear soothing music from all sides, lives much slower, you have the impression that you have returned to the Middle Ages. Take a look at this architecture!

Something that definitely impressed me most was the carriage with horses that you can rent for 3 euros/per person and drive through the whole city. The real feeling of a medieval city is simply unbelievable.

Considering that this city, like Belgrade, is located on the bank of the Danube, this is one of the main reasons why history has begun to settle and urbanize this area, and also one of the reasons why Novi Sad is unusually beautiful. Also, I have to tell you that I did not experience a beautiful sunset in my life than here, and luckily I managed to photograph it, so I will share it with you below.

Petrovaradin Fortress

Probably the most famous place for young people, not only in Serbia but also in the whole world. Reason? Petrovaradin Fortress is a place where every year one of the world's largest festival popular EXIT is held. This summer festival is visited by more than 200 000 people, every year, which is of great importance for the tourism of this city. Otherwise, the Petrovaradin fortress is located on the right bank of the Danube, and it is specific that this fort was built by the Austrian army at the end of the 18th Century as a defense from Turkey army. Due to its enormous dimensions and magnitude, this fortress is also called "Gibraltar on the Danube". Today this fortress is the main symbol of Novi Sad. Also, another landmark is the Clock tower, which is very original and specific in that the small needle shows minutes and large hours. Many people think that this clock is phallic and named him "Drunken clock", not knowing how to watch the time on it. However, clock has been extremely accurate for years. Below I will show you photos of the fortress as well as view from it.

All photos are original and mine, except photo of Petrovaradin Fortress which i downloaded from pixabay. I hope you will like it. It is my sincere recommendation to visit this incredible city and see for yourself its beauty, if you are young, EXIT is a great opportunity to meet the emperor of Novi Sad.

Enjoy :)
