The New Zealand Wood Pigeon

Yesterday afternoon I went outside for a wander around with my camera. I heard the unmistakable swooshing sound of a Wood Pigeon overhead and then from the corner of my eye I saw a branch droop under it's weight as it landed high in a Eucalyptus tree.

It was up too high to get good pictures of it this time. The best I could do is the first photo.

Every year I have a pair of Wood Pigeons come to visit me at my wee farm. I feel rather blessed to be graced with their presence.

Some Facts About the New Zealand Wood Pigeon:

The Maori name for the Wood Pigeon is Kereru. Such a pretty name for a really beautiful big bird.
They are endemic to New Zealand but are also found in Southeast Asia, Malaya and Africa.
It resembles the common pigeon as it has a rather small head compared to it's body.
It eats mainly fruits and drupes.
They grow to around 51cm or 20 inches long and weigh around 650g or 23 oz.
Their head, throat and wings are a shiny purple-green and have a bronze tinge to them and their beaks, feet and eyes are red.

These next photos were taken a couple of years ago. I couldn't believe my luck that this stunning bird hung in the Kowhai tree. It waited there while I went inside to get my camera and then just hung out with me while I took photos. It didn't appear to be scared of me at all. It was a special moment for sure!!!

You can see the purple-green plumage in this picture

The Kereru is an important part of the ecological system of New Zealand. They are the only bird large enough to eat the largest native fruits so they are able to spread the seed intact to enable regeneration. Although they eat mainly fruits they do eat some leaves and their favourite leaves are that of the common plum tree. They can be found feasting on them and the buds when other fruits aren't available.

The Kereru only lay a single egg but can breed up to four times in one season if there is plenty of food available and the weather is kind.

The population of these birds took a dramatic dive when humans arrived in New Zealand.
The possum (introduced from Australia) and the rats (ship rats and brown rats) have reduced the amount of fruit available for the pigeons and other native birds and they also feed on their eggs. This has not helped their breeding efforts.

The population also took a huge hit due to them being hunted for their beautiful plumage and meat. They were seen congregating in flocks on fruit trees feeding in the early 1860s but by 1864 there was a need to restrict hunting as they had seriously declined in numbers. In 1921 there was total protection put on them and now they are protected under the Wildlife Act of NZ.

Funny fact:

Come springtime, they're often seen guzzling berries and doing anything (including hanging upside down in trees) to get a good feed. But when New Zealand pigeons gorge on too much fruit, they must sit in the sun to digest it. And when the weather is good, ripe fruit can ferment in their crop and turn to alcohol, getting them sufficiently boozed up and giving new meaning to the term "daytime drinking". In years where fruit is bountiful, there have been widespread reports of kererū literally falling out of trees because they're too drunk to perch.

Yay! Drunk birds! New Zealand rocks!

But seriously, great pictures and very informative post on these cute little fellas. But I still really like that they get drunk. 😛

XXXOOO

hehehe yip I'd really love to see it - I guess it wouldn't be so nice if they landed on your head from a great height lmao

Cool I have seen them around a bit. Pretty funny how they get drunk too.

That’s so funny about the birds getting drunk on the fruit. I’ve heard of monkeys and elephants getting drunk on fermented fruit. 😂.
Nice captures of the your visitor. First time I’ve seen a wood pigeon, Andy. They remind me of the pigeons with the purple/green colours of their feathers but the wood pigeon is bigger.

Yes they are very similar to the common pigeon. I though it was pretty funny though I have never seen it happen - maybe one day :)

A very informative post and a joy to read, my friend.

Thanks for visiting :) It was a pleasure to write :)

Lol - too funny that they can get drunk from the fruit fermenting! They do have a nice coloring of feathers! Sounds like a really interesting bird! I would like to see one, but I don't know that I'll ever make it to NZ, so your pictures will have to work for now! :) Thanks for sharing!

The unfortunate thing is that even if you came to NZ you may not see one :( That's why it was so special to get up close and personal with one :)

I'm not very familiar with New Zealand so I learned something new today about your trees and birds. I found it interesting that the bird only lays one egg at a time. I'm not a birder so I don't know how many others share that trait, but I do know that most of the bird nests I've seen around here that three or four eggs seems normal for most of the birds.
Is that the only bird that you know of that lays one egg at a time or are there others there as well?

Hey there thanks for stopping by to visit :) I can't say I'm much of a birder either so I'm not really sure - I looked for some more facts to find that the Kiwi usually only lays one egg also - only because the eggs are so big that they break them in the nest if there's more. One particular variety of Kiwi called the Rowi only ever lays one egg a year - unfortunately this makes them the most rare NZ bird.

Well thanks for looking into that, one egg a year would surely make for the bird being rare since I would guess about half the eggs would end up being male birds.

drunk!!!! hahahahahaha this is so awesome!!! LOLOL
and i can't believe those shots that you got of them nibbling the berries on the tree - wow andy!!! these are fantastic!!! :)

and i love that name - Mereru... that would be such a pretty name for a girl :)
where is the accent on it?

I would have to tell you in voice chat :) It was fantastic that it just stayed there like waiting for me to take the shots - I wish it would happen again :)

hehehehe ok deal - next time.

and he will probably keep coming by. he looks like he enjoyed your company! hehehe

The first thought I had while saw you images was FREEDOM. As any kind of bird, we are free, only if we truly wish to be.

Haha yes it would be nice to be as free as a bird :)

It is a little uncanny how close they look to a common pigeon in say NY, that I almost was dismissive of it haha. But they seem prettier. Are they closely related too? Fun facts :)

Oh they are much prettier with their white chests and much bigger, at least twice the size. I guess they are related in so much as they are both pigeons lol

Lovely photos, and very interesting information. The idea of drunk birds falling out of trees is hilarious! (I hope they don't get hurt, though...)

Thanks for sharing in Talk of the Line today!

Haha it is really funny and I guess if they were drunk they would be relaxed when they fell lol - You're welcome it was my pleasure :)

These are beautiful birds Andy!! I love the purple in them!! And have you ever seen with your own eyes one of these drunk birds?? I bet that would be freaking hilarious!! Your pictures are beautiful!!

Rad post Andy! Lol they make such a distinctive sound eh. So do tui... Always know when one of them has flown overhead. Apparently bees get drunk too, and they get banned from entering the hive when they're wasted xD

hahaha you naughty bees - stay outside till you're better lol thats funny!!
