A Journey Through Paradise - My Photography of Mount Cook, New Zealand

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi everyone! I've recently been going through my old travel photos and have been experiencing deep nostalgia for New Zealand. I lived there for 6 months while studying at the University of Auckland, but honestly didn't go to classes much. I couldn't really sit inside for 6 months while there was so much intense beauty all around. I spent some time on the South Island and was blown away every single day by the natural landscapes all around me.

On this leg of the journey, we were driving from Queenstown to Mount Cook on the Southern Island. It was an incredible drive filled with many sceneries of lakes, blue skies, and mountains. We stopped at a few of the lakes, including Lake Pukaki, for a stretching break and to just jump around in our gorgeous surroundings. Our destination was Mount Cook. We arrived at the Mount Cook Backpacker Lodge in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. Mt Cook is the tallest mountain in New Zealand, standing at 3,724 meters. The park contains 140 peaks and 72 glaciers. Aoraki means "cloud piercer" in the Maori language, and that is their name for the mountain.

We were hoping for a clear day to hike the Hooker Valley Track, a 3 hour trail that offers incredible views of the mountain. Unfortunately, a storm rolled in right as we drove up to the lodge. We spent the day cozy and dry in the lodge, taking a needed rest day. Thankfully, it cleared up the next morning and I was able to take a short, quiet hike by myself.

Wow those mountains in New Zealand look to die for .... so beautiful!

Now I am feel nostalgic 😍 I backpacked around the north island (didn't have enough money to get to the South Island) for 3 months when I was 19. I will have to dig out my travel journal and photos now :)

New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places in the world that I have ever been graced to visit! I don't blame you for adventuring instead of studying! I lived in Queenstown it is so beautiful in that region. Did you get a chance to do a bungee jump? The Nevis one was between two mountain peaks!

wow the scenery there is amazing! haha and that traffic jam 😂 I do hope to visit New Zealand again some day!

Is it very expensive? In my mind, New Zealand is a place I might go when I'm retired and wealthy. On my limited budget, NZ has always seemed overpriced.

:-D I totally feel you. Why sitting inside, when there is a whole island with so much beautiful nature. Looking forward to see some photos of New Zealand and your journey
